SATURDAY, OCTOBER 7,1995

Top Story: In her latest offering, Regina Belle reaches back to the of Philadelphia soul sound of the 70s with a collection of oldies, aptly titled, "Reachin’ Back." Remaking tunes—which were created by Philadelphia-based producers Thom Bell, Kenny Gamble and Leon Huff — brought back memories of Belle’s younger days, hanging out in the park with her friends, listening to great soul music by The Spinners, The O’Jays and Teddy Pendergrass. But she also hopes this collection serves as a musical history lesson for today’s young artist. “With ‘Reachin’ Back,’ I thought it was time to let the younger audience know that the music that’s sampled on raps and the music that’s remade today was done before and they were hits before," Belle told the ‘Scope. “I think it makes a statement about music in

Regina Belle

general. When you haveclassic music, it never loses its essence," Phat Flicks: “To Wong Foo, Thanks For Everything Julie Newmar" has action stars Patrick Swayze and Wesley Snipes, along with comic John Leguizamo as three drag queens on a cross-country trek to Hollywood. Discussing how “beautiful" he looked, Snipes says: “Sometimes I looked real good and sometimes (I didn’t). But, overall, I wouldn’t particularly pick myself up on a date.” His co-star was a bit kinder in his assessment of his own appearance. Leguizamo says: “I looked in the mirror and

thought, ‘Damn, I’m the bomb.’ I looked kind of sexy, especially when I stood really far away from the mirror." Also in theaters is Spike Lee's “Clockers," starring Harvey Keitel as the hard-bitten cop Rocco Klein, John Tuturro as his cynical partner Larry Mazelli, Delroy Lindo in an Oscar-worthy performance as the neighborhood drug king Rodney, and newcomer Mehki Phifer as the young drug dealer Strike. All of the characters become embroiled in the world of drugs, murder and the police. In the past, Lee has said he didn’t want to do a “’hood” drama, but “Clockers” changed his mind because: “I felt I could make it different ... show that there is hope. A lot of these other films don’t provide that. If you’re in the ‘hood, you’re going to be stuck there forever and the only options are selling drugs or

becoming a rapper. I think that’s too limited a view to have in life." People, Places & Things: One of the latest books to come out of the O.J. Simpson trial is written by Johnnie Cochran’s ex-wife Barbara CochranBerry. In “Life After Johnnie Cochran: Why I Left the Sweetest Talking, Most Successful Black Lawyer in LA," Cochran-Berry details how the “dream team” lawyer emotionally and physically abused her for most of the 17 years the two were married. “In public, he was successful, bright and charismatic,” Berry says. “But in private he was often deceitful, manipulative, controlling and abusive." The Rev. Al Sharpton is helping Tupac Shakur get his GED after hearing the rapper’s claim that the Clinton Correctional Facility in New York was prohibiting him from

earning the certificate. In related news, Coolio, Salt-N-Pepa, Ice-T, Dr. Dre and Yo Yo are starring in Shakur's upcoming “Temptation” video. Since Shakur is “unavailable” at the moment, the other rappers agreed to appear. D'Angelo couldn’t even get into his own concert at the Supper Club in New York. The singer went to the front of the line at the club and was turned away. Even though he told the bodyguards he was the evening’s entertainment, they refused to believe him. It took 30 minutes before he was allowed in. We want to hear from you, too.
