CASH Continued from A1
We also have college graduates working in several of our stores, store managers who are willing to help with customer service and a smaller atmosphere to help cater to people’s needs.” Less than 1/2 of 1 percent of the merchandise received at the Cash America Pawn is labeled as stolen or missing merchandise, according to reports from Cash America Pawn officials. “When people bring merchandise in, we make sure it has a model and serial number on it to make sure it hasn’t been reported stolen,” said Newman. “After that, they must fill out a pawn ticket which is registered with the pawn shop and the police department as well as show picture identification and give a thumb print before they can receive any money for the merchandise they bring in.” Community people felt that one way of getting back their neighborhood was to get rid of the
negative aspects which are destroying the area. Ray wholeheartedly agrees. “Personally I think all pawn shops should be shut down because their prices are to high and they charge you twice as much to get your merchandise back,” said Ray. “These stores come to places where women are raising their children and it is just the white man’s way of genocide against Blacks with these pawn shops and liquor stores. “I see the same people going in and out of these pawn shops two and three times a day. It’s just a cycle that just keeps going back and forth, back and forth. They steal and then pawn the merchandise to support their habits. Black people are just killing themselves.”
