New computer I literacy program implemented Team 2000, Inc. in cooperation with the Indy Parks Department, has implemented a computer literacy program for young children. Supporters include: NBD Bank, the Indianapolis Urban League’s King-Walker-Wilkins-Young Memorial Awards and Vincennes University. With the assistance of Rod Chaney, Indy Parks District Supervisor and Lane Young, manager of Information Systems at Indy Parks have acquired 10 computers for the program. The instructor, Janet : Hughes teaches the kids basic computer skills such as using a mouse, .painting and word processing. The classes are Monday-Wednesday at Douglass Park. SIMPSON Continued from A7 to bolster Simpson’s alibi. Simpson has pleaded innocent to the deaths of ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson, 35, and her friend, Ronald Lyle Goldman, 25, outside her condominium on June 12. Deputy District Attorney Marcia Clark filed the prosecution’s motion asking the court to order Simpson to give hair samples so they can be compared with hairs recovered at the crime scene. “One of the items found at the homicide scene was a knit cap,” Clark said. “Inside the cap black curly hairs were detected which have been determined to be of African-American origin.” “Further, scientific testing and comparison to the hairs found in the knit cap found at the crime scene with samples from the defendant will reveal whether the hair found in that cap could have come from the defendant.” She also said “the location in which the cap was found would tend to indicate that it was related to the commission of the crimes charged here.” Clark stressed that hair comparison evidence is excluded from Fifth Amendment protection against selfincrimination. In still another unusual twist to the murder case, defense lawyer Robert L. Shapiro demanded quick accesk-Je-^ evidence against Simpson. Shapiro’s motion signaled the defense could introduce its own evidence at the preliminary hearing scheduled for Thursday. “Virtually every witness who has been involved in the investigation of this case has been subpoenaed to testify at the preliminary examination,” Shapiro said. The tactic would turn the procedure into a mini-trial. The preliminary hearing normally is a brief proceeding in which only the prosecution presents a candid version of its case to justify a trial. But the defense is allowed to counter with its own evidence — an opportunity which is usually seized only in high profile cases. Shapiro asked for immediate access to blood samples, Simpson’s Ford Bronco, a ski cap or mask found near the victims and gloves found at the murder scene and at Simpson’s Brentwood estate. “The evidence has not been made available to the defense for examination and photographing,” Shapiro said. “Nor have the blood samples been made available for the defense to conduct independent DNA testing.”

somewhat deterred crime in the area. Christian’s son, Lee Jr., general manager of I he McDonald’s at 52nd St. and Keystone Ave., also owned by his father, says their goal is to provide a non-confrontational environment for community, residents and law enforcement officials to become betteracquainted. “We want to build bridges to better community and police relations,” the younger Lee said. “Any responsible business owner should take that type of initiative in their respective community as a way of giving back to the community. When you assist the city at large, you can create a belter atmosphere for law enforcement officers to operate in, and for citizens to move around in.” Ted Carlson, marketing supervisor for McDonald’s, explained the purpose of the program. “The intent is to provide a nonthreatening environment where law

enforcement officers and the community interact,” Carlson said. “We know the police are very supportive of this, and we think it’s a great idea. We only hope the community will be as supportive.” There are also police substations inside the McDonald’s restaurants at 38th St. and Tacoma Ave., and 10th St. and Bozart, according to Carlson. Employees seem to relish the idea of police presence. “Ido feel a lot safer,” said Jo-Ann Cloud, a four-month McDonald’s employee. “There have been a lot of things happening at otherrestaurants. If a policeman is there when trouble starts, you don’t have to worry about trying to call one. “Also, the guys don’t pick with the girlson line as much. They’re no! as indignant as they used to be. They give us a lot more respect, because the officers aren’t going to let them be any other way.”
