is scheduled to close in 1997, various portions of the facility will become available as early as next year. According to Porter, “It is apparent that the mayors of Indianapolis and Lawrence have no interest in living up to the requirements of their positions. I am hopeful that our state leaders will take a different approach and take full advantage of this chance to do something about one of the most serious problems facing inner cities today.” The 1990 census estimated the number of homeless in Indianapolis
at 700, while others believe the city’s homeless population is considerably higher. Dr. Gilbert targets nine IPS schools Indianapolis Public School Superintendent Shirl E. Gilbert II recently released the initial school consolidation proposal which was prepared by the Working Group. The group based its decision on criteria sanctioned by the board. The following schools are to be consolidated in June 1995: Gold Spring School, Joseph J. Bingham School 84, Jonathan
Jennings School 109, Parkview School 81, James E. Roberts School 97, George B. Loomis School 85, Kenneth WalkerSchool, 89, Merle Sidener Middle School, 659 and George Washington High School. According to Gilbert, the Indianapolis community is invited to attend public hearings on school consolidations in the Education Services Center board room, 120 East Walnut St. The first meeting was held Wednesday. Following the public hearings, the Working Group will meet in closed sessions during May to consider information, comments, suggestions and criticisms gathered at the four hearings. A final recommendation will be presented to board commissioners on June 7. Failure to accept a consolidation proposal could cause the district to
face a $3.6 million budget shortfall and the possibility of state control. Individuals interested in addressing the Working Group are encouraged to pre-register by calling the Office of School and Community Relations at 317-226-4829. Police, high court begin separate probes on Brown Last week, the Indiana State Police and the Indiana Supreme Court began separate investigations into the alleged sexual harassment and criminal wrongdoing charges against Dwayne Brown, clerk of the Supreme Court.
