Although you can withdraw your money from your IRA at any time, be aware that you may be subject to certain penalties that essentially deprive you of any tax benefit. If you are age 59 1/2 to 70 1/2, you are allowed penalty-free withdrawals of your iRA contributions and earnings at any time, in any amount. II you made tax-deductiblecon-trihutions to your IRA, your entire withdrawal is taxed as ordinary income for the year. However, if you arc under age 59 1/2 and withdraw money from \ our IR A, the amount of your withdrawal is taxed an additional 10 percent along with the regular income lax. There arc, however, some instances w here you may not incur this penally. Individuals.who become disahled before they reach age 59 1/2 are free to make IRA withdrawals at tiny time without having to pay the lOperccnt penally. Also, if you have recently lost a spouse or parent and are the beneficiary of their IRA assets, you will not be charged a penally on the distributed assets, regardless of your age or the age of the deceased. If you are underage 59 1/2, you may be able to use some of your IRA funds and escape pcnalticsby borrowing money from your IRA for a limited amount of time. ablcs you to do this only once a year. The onc-ycar period begins on thedate you receive the IRA distribution, not the date when you roll it over into another IRA. This rule applies to each separate IRA you own. Do not borrow more money from your IRA than you can repay within that 60-day period. If you find that your financial situation docs not allow you to rollover the total amount you have withdrawn within 60days, rollovcras much as you can. You will then be charged the 10 percent penalty only on the amount you keep. As with early withdrawals, assets that arc left in an IRA indefinitely can also be penalized. In fact, late withdrawals face even stiffer penalties than those on premature withdrawals. You arc required to begin the IRA payout process by April 1 following the year you reach age 70 1/2. Subsequent withdrawals arc due by December 31 each year. The minimum amount of your withdrawal is determined by your life expectancy or the joint life expectancies of you and your spouse or designated beneficiary. If you fail to withdrawthc minimum amount, you may be taxed on the difference between the amount you should have withdrawn and the amount you actually removed.
