Her decision comes at a crucial time for the movement, which faces the possible reversal of legal abonion by the U.S. Supreme Coun. Planned Parenthood officials were dismayed at Wattleton’s decision but her opponents, who had long criticized her for turning the family planning organization into an abortion rights group, were pleased according to U S. Mayor Marion Barry was transferred to another prison late last week following a hearing on allegations by two other inmates that a woman performed oral sex on Barry in a visiting room at a Petersburg, Va„ prison. The unwanted transfer hasn’t deprived him of any privileges, but it has him in a more tightly controlled setting, authorities said Saturday. The move came Friday night after prison officials held a hearing on the allegations. He was transferred from Petersburg, a minimums-security prison, to a low-security facility in Lorctto, Pa., said Gregory Bogdan, a spokesman for the federal Bureau of Prisons. Barry has blamed the charges on racism. 4/HtrtTHIS WEEK World watching Algerian situation with alarm ALGERIA — Governments across the world were expressing their concern this week after the Algerian government canceled the second round of elections scheduled for this week. News reports said the elections were canceled after the new government, formed after the surprise resignation of the nation’s president last week, became fearful that Islamic fundamentalists would win the parliamentary elections scheduled for Thursday. In Washington, U.S. State Department spokeswoman Margaret Tutwciler said Monday that the U.S. was watching the situation with caution and appealed to all sides to remain calm. Noting the progess made towards establishing full democracy in Algeria, Tutwciler said she hoped democratic processes could continue. Other governments worldwide also expressed their concern. Members of the Islamic Salvation Front, which scored an overwhelming victory in legislative elections last month and was expected to win this week's election, were reported as wailing to see what the army-backed Ruling Council would do, now that it controls the government. All sides said they hope the situation will not become violent. According to one Algiers resident quoted by VOA-Africa, the country’s newspapers are full of speculation as to what might happen. Many people seem to think that the Ruling Council will announce a new set of measures, including a slate of emergency that would allow suspension of the consitution and the dissolution of political parties. The streets of Algiers were reported calm Tuesday, with troops and some tanks maintaining their positions around key installations. But one Western observer told CNN, “There is tension inthe air... The army is definitely ready to move.” 9 killed in South African violence SOUTH AFRICA — Nine people hevc been killed in political violence since Monday in South Africa. Clashes between rival black South African groups have killed thousands of people in recent years. Kenyan opposition leaders jailed KENYA — Two Kenyan opposition figures charged with spreading a rumor of a planned military takeover, were freed this week, but two others remain in jail. The arrested men arc members of Forum for the Restoration of Democracy, the group which on Friday called for President Daniel Arap Moi to comment on a widespread rumor that he planned to let the army take control of Kenya. They told reporters that Moi fears defeat in the upcoming presidential elections. Moi denies the allegations. — Compiled by Steve Hammer

Kotrino Denson's story is an inspiring one. The daughter of a teen-age mother, Katrina pulled herself out of poverty by turning to the books. And not the streets. Now with the help of the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund, Katrina is closing in on her goal of becoming a nurse. The Miller Brewing Company is committed to making dreams like Katrina’s a reality through the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund. It’s the only four-year, national scholarship program devoted to providing tuition and expenses to students attending historically Block public colleges and universities. These schools don't receive the same financial backing given to Black private colleges and universities. Yet these thirty-six historically Black public schools account for over 70% of the students graduating from Black colleges and universities. Help us help future leaders like Katrina They're some of the best investments you can make today Give to the Thurgood Marshall Scholarship Fund.
