Bandit successful with summer ‘re-runs’

Indianapolis Police are seeking information about a hold-up man who has struck at least six times since June. He favorite targets are Dollars General Stores. He has robbed stores throughout the city and county area. Police reported that the bandit usually arrives just before the evening closing hour of the business. After the clerk has handed over the money from the register he forces the clerk and any other employees to the back store room. Once inside the store room he orders the workers to slay put for a least 10 minutes or he will kill them. Then he leaves the store. The suspect was described as Afri-can-American man, mid-30 , s,6’ 1" tall with a very slim build; not over 170 pounds. Victims reported the robber is generally polite during the hold-up. Jay Edwards: probation on battery claim Former Indiana University basketball star Jay Edwards received one year’s probation after pleading guilty to a single misdemeanor countofbatteryAug.24 in Monroe County Superior Court. Edwards is required to pay $70 in medical expenses and court costs. Edwards pleaded guilty to slapping former Indianapolis resident Beth Ann Irish twice April 22 during an argument between the two at a party in Bloomington. One count of battery was dismissed and the guilty plea made on the second when Edward’s lawyer, Viola Taliferro, and Deputy Prosecutor David Hunter reached an agreement that Irish had approved.Conviction on the charge was delayed one year as long as Edwards pays medical and court costs and does not commit any criminal acts. Edwards has no previous police , record.

Officer’s weapon discharges during struggle with teen The weapon of a plainclothes Indianapolis police officer accidentally discharged as the officer struggled with a teenage girl while he tried to serve a search warrant Monday, said Wendy Snitko, Indianapolis Police Department media relations assistant The incident led to the arrest of a 21-year-old woman on marijuana charges and three juveniles whose names are being withheld. Detective Charles Kaiser of the property recovery branch went to an apartment at 540 N. Forest Hills Drive where it was believe four burglary suspects were present According to Snitko, a 15-year-old girl ran into the bathroom and began flush items down a toilet when Kaiser entered the apartment When Kaiser ran after her, she tried to slam the bathroom door then grabbed his wrist and his weapon, which he had pulled, discharged. The bullet struck a door, Snitko said. Two of four being sought were located and arrested. The girl was arrested for resisting law enforcement and visiting a common nuisance. The woman, Toni Carr, was arrested for possession of marijuana greater than 30 grams, resisting law enforcement and possession of stolen property. Police also confiscated and undetermined amount of a substance believed to be marijuana. Man arrested for stabbing of man, beating of teen A 23-year-old city man was arrested at about 2:30 a.m. Sunday in connection with the stabbing of a 21-year-old man and the battery of a teenage woman.Preston Lament Carter, was arrested for battery with injury and criminal confinement. A ccording to Indianapolis police, Oren Killebrew, 3500 block of North Caroline Avenue, summoned officers to report that Carter had stabbed him in the right thigh and cut his left hand at the apartment of Killebrew’s girlfriend, LaTonya Keys, 19,3700 block of North Meridian Street. Carter is a former boyfriend of Keys and the two had broken up last week, police said. Two officers accompanied Killebrew back to the apartment to try to locate Carter. Police noticed two people looking out the window of a darkened aparunent. The people left the window when officer directed a flashlight toward them. After entering the security building, officers got Keys to answer. According to a police report, she sounded answered questions hesitantly and sounded afraid. Sheeventually opened the door and officers found Carter inside. Killebrew and Keys told police they were in bed when Carter entered the apartment. Killebrew struggled with the intruder. Carter then reportedly went into the kitchen, got a steak knife and stabbed and cut Killebrew. He then allegedly hit Keys several times, causing knots on her forehead. Police investigate gunfire A 27-year-old man was arrested for criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon, 1935 firearms act violation and fleeing police after he allegedly fired a random gunshot at the Bluebird Lounge, 3806E. 30th Street, just after midnight Sunday morning. Police were called to investigate a report of a man who had fired a shot from a .22-caliber revolver. Officers then heard a gunshot in the vicinity. They saw a man matching the description of the suspect walking rapidly through an alley and across a vacant lot and looking back. Police ordered the man to stop several times, but he continued to walk while attempting to put what appeared to be a weapon into a bag he wore on his belt, a police report said. Tbe man, later identified as Allen S. Seats, 3100 block of North Gale Street. Seats finally stopped. During a search, officers found a .22 caliber revolver with four spent rounds in a pouch around the man’s waist. Seats was arrested for criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon and 1935 firearms act violation. In an unrelated case, a 17-year-old youth was arrested for allegedly firing three rifle blasts at his stepfather during an argument Sunday. Garrett Thompson, 1200 block of Windsor Street, was arrested for criminal recklessness with a deadly weapon. Investigating officers said that before being asked, Thompson admitted to having a rifle but denied firing it at his stepfather, Robert Lawrence, 30, with whom he had been fighting off and on since last Friday. He claimed that Lawrence threatened to kill him the next time he saw him. The youth claimed that Lawrence chased him out of the house with a carjack and tried to hit him Thompson doubled back and retrieved the rifle from the house. Thompson claimed he aimed the weapon at Lawrence but did not fire. Thompson later admitted firing once at Lawrence because Lawrence had allegedly been beating Thompson since Friday. Thompson was sent to Wishard Memorial Hospital for treatment of a swollen hand.
