Goliath: The largest problem ever

By VELORA MANSFIELD ANDERSON Syndicated Writers A Artists, Inc. Suleiman Ali Nasnush, a Lybian born in 1943, is said to be the tallest man ever to play basketball in the history of the sport. According to the 1986 edition of the Guinness Book of World Records, Nashnush checks in at eight feet even in 1962 with a Libyian team. Another giant, Alexander Sizonnenko, a player ot the same sport for the U.S.S.R., is recorded as being the second tallest man at V 10”. Running close behind him is NBA’s Manute Bol at 7’ 8”. But the tallest man in the world that exists this day is in the person or Robert Wadlow, a resident of Alton, Illinois who stands at 8’11”. “And then went out a champion out of the camp of the Philistines, named Goliath of Gath, whose height was six cubits and a span.” (I Sam. 17:4) Goliath’s height in modern footage and inches was 9’ 9” (1 cubit 9 18”) and a span is the average distance between the thumb and the ’’pinky” finger of a man’s hand when stretched apart. The Bible describes Goliath’s everyday apparel as being a helmet made of brass. His coat was of mail (net or mesh metal) which was 5,000 she’kels of brass, the equivalent of 166 pounds. Greaves (armour) of brass were upon his legs and a target (shield) of brass between his shoulders. His spear was the size of a weaver’s beam; it’s head 600 she’kels (20 lbs.) of iron. This would only leave to one’s imagination what type of weights Goliath might have been able to bench press today during his workouts to keep in shape. The world stages competitions among men, similar to that of David

The problem with euthanasia

and Goliath. Muhammad Ali vs. George Foreman, Mike Tyson vs. James (Bonecrusher) Smith and the most recent that remains to be seen, Haglervs. Leonard. While these battles reign in popularity today, none is as profound as that of David vs. Goliath. Smith’s Bible Dictionary describes David as short, light, and calmly. He was strong and prudent. (I Sam 16:12) The fact that Goliath was the largest human ever to exist leaves us with a bit of inspiration after reading about how David, a man less than half the stature of his foe, was able to defeat him. His confidence as expressed in I Sam 17:45 worked for him. David and Goliath’s confrontation was for the glory of God. It symbolizes man’s great confrontations in life and how they can be eliminated just by believing and having faith in God. Many of us today would have looked upon Goliath as a big, big thing as compared to Manute and the other giants, but place situations such as these in a spiritual connotation, and today’s giants are no big deal. Our biblical giant Goliath, surpasses them all. David went down to face the largest man ever to exist, staring him in the eyes and saying, “Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield, but I came to thee in the name of the Lord of Hosts...this day the Lord will deliver thee into mine hand...that all may know that there is a God in Israel...and he will deliver you into our hands.” (I Sam. 17:45-47) Goliath was a big problem and there hasn’t been one a big as him since. What does this tell us? The problems today are not as great as yesterday’s, they only seem bigger because we’ve lost the faith.

In 1984 Colorado Governor Richard Lamm stated that the sick and elderly have a "duty to die and get out of the way.” Hitler ordered German institutions to help the infirm “die and get out of the way” in 1939. Six years later Hitler’s magnificent “Reich” was in ruins, and he himself was a suicide. Hitler had appealed to the highest authority a nation that had forgotten God could offer for his euthanasia scheme: psychiatry professors and pediatricians. They signed death warrants for 275,000 aged infirm, senile, mentally retarded, epileptic, amputated, deformed—

even bed wetters.

“Only the viable human beings who have the capability for meaningful life may, but need not, be protected by the state.” This was essentially the decision of Hitler’s advisors in 1939. Tragically, these words are quoted from the 1973 U.S. Supreme Court Roe vs Wade decision legalizing abortion and infanticide as a consequence has followed. A climate increasingly sympathetic to euthanasia or "mercy killing” is now developing and 38 states have passed Living Will laws. The U.S. Surgeon General notes, “for every Baby Doe, there could be 5,000 to 20,000 Granny Does.”

Church World Today By Virginia Knrwy Opponents to Living Wills fed that these bills have passed state legislatures so rapidly in the past half decade largely because the public is confused as to what a Living Will is. Also, several Christians have not researched the matter. Christians should take into account Proverbs 6:16-19 which expressively states God’s position on this issue. “There are six things which the Lord hates, yet seven which are an abomination to Him...hands that shed innocent blood, a heart that devises wicked plans...” Two states, South Carolina and Alaska, now permit physicians to kill by starvation or dehydration patients who have signed Living Wills. Other states are entertaining the idea of permitting killing by lethal injection—active euthanasia. With this, it then appears that what we are going to see is legalized suicide coming in steps by establishing a constitutional right to refuse medical treatment. Like abortion on demand, euthanasia soon will be common practice —unless something is done to stem the tide.
