Save money: use the child care tax credit

As tax time approaches, families that use child care should keep in mind that they can trim their federal tax bill by taking advantage of the child care tax credit. The tighter your budget is and the more you need tax relief, the more help the credit gives you. The child care tax credit helps you by allowing you to use expenses you incur for child care because of work to reduce your tederal income tax. The amount of the credit you will receive will be based on your yearly income and what you spend for day care. Using the credit is well worth it. You can save at least $480 this year on your child care needs for each child. The child care tax credit is easy to use. When you are filling out your federal income tax form, look for the line called “Credit for Child and Dependent Care Expenses.” You will find it on the Short Form (1040A)andthe Long Form(l040). You qualify for this tax credit if you owe taxes and pay for child care for a child under 15 in order to work or look for a job. (You also qualify if you pay for care for a disabled

Dear Ethel,

What do you do with kids who don’t know anything whatsoever about their roots and heritage? Every year during Black History Month, I try to get my kids involved in some of the events. They are 12, 15 and 16 years old and see no connection between Africa, slavery or the civil rights movement and themselves. I spend much time during the whole month focusing on the different programs and events but they either get bored and tune them out or fuss and complain about shoving this “old timey mess” down their throats. The biggest thing they got out of Martin Luther King’s Birthday was the privilege of being out of school. Please give me some pointers; I’m all out of steam!

Disgusted

Dear Disgusted,

It may be no consolation but you are not alone in your concern.

don’t know anything about our heritage as black people and act like they don’t want to know. I brought home a black history questionnaire the other day from work and they couldn’t answer one question. I ask them simple things like who wrote the Negro National Anthem and who was George Washington Carver and they just sit and look blank and silly. I’m embarrassed to admit the ignoranceof these two.

family member for reason). You can

regardless of:

Whether you are married or single. Single people qualify if they are working or looking for a job; married couples qualify if both work or one works and the other is seeking work or attending school. Divorced parents with nhvsical custody of their children for a longer period of the year than their former spouse who claim their child as a dependent also qualify even if they are recei vi ng ch i Id support. What kind of child care vou use. It can be a babysitter, family day care, a church program, a nursery school, summer camp, in-home care, an after school program or full-day child care center. You qualify if you pay a family member over 19 to look after your child, as long as you do not claim that family member as a dependent. In 1983, 6.4 million American taxpayers claimed the dependent care tax credit, the majority of whom had family incomes under $25,000. It is one approach to addressing a very major problem: the growing costs of child care. I urge . all who are eligible to use it.

problem of “heritaee inaopreciation” as one of multiple origin. Firstly, responsibility for the training in one’s ethnic culture and history lies with the members of that group. As a whole, we as black people have neglected that responsibility. Secondly, we cannot focus in on our history during the month of February and expect the message of hundreds of years to be instilled in 28 days. Thirdly, it is a sad fact but true that many of odr youth are exposed to an environment that discourages and even berates any attempt to identify with their own culture. An even sadder truth is that the rejection of cultural and historical identity is often perpetuated by black adults. With this in mind, it behooves those of vou who are concerned, to do everything in your' power to effect change. Don’t try to cram all of your facts and information sharing in one month; spread your teaching throughout the year. According to one of our local librarians, Mrs. Ruby Anderson, “The Indianapolis Public Libraries really focus on presentations relevant to black history and for young people who participate, we’re noticing an upswing in awareness”. So, the resources are there if we but use them. Don’t be embarrassed to admit the ignorance of your young people—be committed to reducing that ignorance. *** Ethel McCane is executive director of the Learning Tree Tutorial/Counseling Program.
