National Council of Negro. Women, Indian Section, supports United Negro College Fund

The National Council of Negro Women, Indianapolis Section, held their fourth annual New Year’s Breakfast at Marble’s Cafeteria Dec. 28. The main theme for the celebration was to continue support for the United Negro College Fund. The United Negro College Fund is a tax exempt corporation which represents a consortium of 43 predominantly black colleges and universities. These private, fullyaccredited institutions provide a quality education for some 45,000 men and women. UNCF family believes that better, stronger educational institutions will help make a better and stronger nation. However, doing this job requires more money now than dver before. That is why UNCF exists: to raise operating money for its member schools. The fund-raising activities of UNCF helps its membership to maintain the highest academic standards and prepare their graduates for demanding professions and careers. Ms. Leslie Harris, a fund raiser for UNCF and guest speaker for the event, pointed out that historically black colleges have provided the opportunity for young people to receiver a higher education. These students come from families who fall far below poverty lines and require financial assistance on a much larger scale than is normally available at many state facilities. She continued by sharingthe Philos hold holiday party, gift exchange The Alpha Sigma Philo Affiliates held their Christmas Luncheon and gift exchange at the Meridian Inn. Distinguished guests were sorors .and founders Hattie Mae Dulin Redfordand Vivian Marbury. Other sorors present were June Curry, Myrtle Bryant, Helen T. Pruitt, Lora J. V ann, and Crystal Peoples. *** The Philos are growing and have five new affiliates. They are Philos Peggy Brown, Clara Warner, Elaine Bell and Ella McGill. Also to be included is a transfer from Gary, Philo Jacqui McWay from Alpha Sigma Sigma Affiliate. ••• Members visited Soror Nannie Mae Johnson, who is another soror founder of Alpha Sigma Chapter, Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. The organization has had its 63rd anniversary, having been founded on the Butler University campus. The Philos are still seeking qualified members to help support Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. The preparation for the George Washington Carver program is in effect and the Philos will be deeply involved. The Philos will also be making preparation for an Area III workshop in March.

MEMBERS OF THE Indianapolis Section of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) and their guests are pictured outside Marble’s Cafeteria, where they held their 4th Annual New Year’s Breakfast Dec. 28. On front row from left are Mildred L. Fitts, following statistics with the audience: Twenty percent of all black students are enrolled in UNCF colleges; these schools have educated 75 percent of all blacks who have Ph.D.’s; 85 percent of black physicians, 80 percent of the black judges, and 70 percent of the black

teachers in this country.

Ms. Harris concluded that UNCF supported schools provide the most education in this country for the least amount of money, making

these schools cost effective.

Council founder Mary McLeod Bethune knew the importance of education and established the Educational and Industrial Training School for Negro Girls in 1904 (currently named Bethune-Cookman College). Because of this basic principle, NCNW chapters all over the country have long supported education. The Indianapolis Section of the National Council of Negro Women has been a suppoarter of UNCF since its inception. Because of the involvement, the members raised a substantial contribution for UNCF during this annual breakfast. NCNW, Indianapolis Section President Helen Clay was again invited by the UNCF organization to be an on-the-air guest in order to encourage the viewing audience to participate in this worthwhile cause. It was quite an honor for the

organization.
