1 KER SALE... MILLERS Pm

WASHINGTON— Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Samuel R. Pierce Jr. has announced the awarding to SI.5-million in Community Development Block Grant funds to 15 historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs). Each institution received $100,000 to aid community development through research and technical assistance. “Each of the schools will deliver a wide range of technical assistance to communities eligible for HUD Community Development Block Grants and Urban Development Action Grants. The services rendered will include training of city and county employees in housing management and financial management,” the secretary said. “This is what a sense of community is all about. It’s people learning to work together cooperatively, productively.” Secretary Pierce’s personal commitment to assisting HBCUs has led to the department’s long-term pro-1 gram support through small grants t for research, college work/study • and student intern programs. Monies to HBCUs from the Secretary’s Discretionary Fund total $8.45 million since 1981. “Black colleges have played and are playing an essential and unparalleled role in educating young black Americans...preparing them for good citizenship, responsibility and success,” said Secretary Pierce. Colleges and universities receiving the latest round of grants include Miles College, Tuskeegee Institute, Bethune-Cookman, Florida Memorial, Morris Brown, Atlanta University, St. Augustine’s, Central State, Fisk, Bishop, Prairie View A&M, Texas Southern, Hampton University, Virginia State University, and Howard University.

I attended several Christmas parties over the weekend, and most of them were a real blast. This is especially true of the one thrown by Rosalind Burns, which was wellattended. Rosalind also celebrated her birthday amidst the Christmas cheer. , There also was a swinging party thrown by Dianne Johnson, and I understand that was the one to have gone to. Sorry I missed that one. Maybe the next time around. **• I was invited to attend Judge Webster Brewer’s party at St. Peter Claver last week, and it was great. A lot of folks attended and had gobs of fun. I, for one, am looking forward to next year’s. eee One Christmas party which always stands out in my mind is the one given each year by Judge Clarence Bolden. Goodies are served, god it makes for a joyous occa-sion.-Mary ^Vooids, who handles the big chores for the judge, was nght there, sure-handed as ever, seeing to it that everyone was having a good time. Bubba McQueen and Chuck and the rest of the Municipal Court 13 team joined in to help. It’s always a pleasure to attend. •ee The most unique Christmas party usually is the one given by Judge JohnTranbeg. Tranbeg likes to throw a breakfast party, in which guests eat all the good cooking provided by his wife and staff. His wife fixed up an egg casserole, and it was delicious.
