Mr. and Mrs. Leroy Thomas Sr. mark their golden anniversary

NEW YORK - One of New York’s recent biggest hits didn’t have a marquee with neon lights heralding its arrival, and didn’t happen on the Great White Way. But Seventh Avenue lit up within the wails of the Fashion Institute of Technology with glitter, entertainment stars and spectacular fashion at the Fourth Annual Harveys Bristol Cream Tribute to the Black Designer. Ten black designers received the coveted “Harvey” plaque this year in recognition of their contribution to the fashion industry. And, if willowy models showing off the designers’ latest creations weren’t enough, there was the singing of Diahann Carroll and the tapping and strutting of “Sophisticated Ladies’’ star Gregory Hines, co-hosts for the evening. The icing on the cake was a special appearance by jazz legend Lionel Hampton, cochairman of the Tribute, and his orchestra. The Tribute is sponsored by Harveys of Bristol Overseas, Ltd., makers of Harveys Bristol (’ream sherry, in conjunction with F.I.T., and proceeds provide scholarships for F.I.T. students in the field of fashion design. The ten designers honored were: Jeffrey Banks, Scott Barrie, Brenda Waites Bolling, Stephen Burrows, Carl Davis, Fabrire. Lester Hayatt, Claude Payne. Willi Smith and the team of Kevin & Robert. Designers were chosen by a panel of fashion critics and authorities headed by Audrey Smaltz, fashion consultant for F.I.T. This year Harveys instituted a special aw'ard for promising student designers, which was awarded, to F.I.T. student Steven Cutting. In accepting his “Harvey." Cutting “war ned" Seventh Avenue to watch out because “I’m coming.” According to Ian Davidson, C.S. resident director for liar veys of Bristol Overseas, Ltd., “We view the Tribute as' a catalyst which brings together leaders of the fashion' industry and community leaders to ho nor the men and women who are designers, as well as entrepreneurs, and gives them recognition for their enormous contribution to the fashion world.” Harveys Bristol Cream is imported and marketed in the I’nited States by Heublein, Inc., Hartford. Connecticut.
