Advent is applied by the Christian Church to certain weeks before Christmas. Anciently. the season of advent consisted of six weeks, and this is still the duration of it in the Greek Church. In the Catholic Church, however, and in the Protestant Churches that observe advent, it lasts only four weeks, beginning with the Sunday nearest St. Andrews Day, November 30, either before or after. It is appointed to be observed as a season of devotion, being intended to commemorate the coming of Christ in the flesh and to direct thoughts to His second coming. This season was observed with great austerity by the primitive Christians. Commitment: Christians, we have commited our lives to Christ, meaning that Christians live by His law. His love and His forgiveness. This means that we have a responsibility also. We must do His will because we are commited to do His will which includes loving our neighbor, spreading Christianity and praying without ceasing. In part, many in the home of Mary, the mother of Jesus, were gathered in her home praying. Prayer: Never cease to pray. Prayer really changes things. Commit your way into the

Lord, trust also in Him and He shall bring it to pass. Many times prayer is by rote, just words, but consecrated prayer changes things. It is conversation with the Father. Jesus was a martyr. He gave His life for man and all who believe and all who believe in Him shall not perish but have

eternal life. Just Jesus dying would not be meaningful if He had not risen to be alive forever more. He made the rough place smooth. He is life. His mother was Mary, very often called Blessed Virgin Mary or Saint Mary. She was chosen by the Father to be the mother of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. He is life. Mary was a pious woman of poor Jewish origin, but faithful in every way. We would do well to emulate Mary, the mother of Jesus. We never read or hear of her complaining. All the mysteries she did not understand, she kept them in her heart. Hut still she had courage. Jesus told John. “Behold thy mother.”
