It is my opinion that the news media in reporting a small incident at Perry Meridian High School has let it get way out of hand. The incident did not warrant federal interven Hon. It was such a trivial thing.

MORTON'S 253”’;

School Board member, received the evening’s top accolade. The Fredrick Douglass Freedom Award. Setting the tone for this address. Brown said he came to discuss history and not hisstory.” He solicited direct listener participation with a brief quiz: 1. What Afro-American invented the electric traffic light? 2. Name three Afro-Ameri-can heroes of the American Revolution. ' 3. Who chopped down the cherry tree but could not tell a lie? If you could answer only the third question, you were, in the speaker's estimation, a “typical mis-educated American.” Tony Brown's positive approach was underscored by two points. Blacks cannot truthfully refer to themselves as a minority since non-whites comprise over two-thirds of Ihe world’s population and blacks should stop thinking of themselves as poor. As he put it, “You convince a man there is a back door and you won't have to make him use it; he'll insist on it. One reason for the economic condition of the black community is that other ethnic communities turn Tinted windows on cars become unlawful Dec. 31 Indiana State Police Superin trodent John T. Shettle reminds motorists of the new lawprohibiting vehicles with tinted windows after December 31, 1981. The law- states that no person shall drive any motor vehicb whirh has (1) windshield (2) side wing or (3) side window which is part of a front door; which is tinted to the extent, o'* manufactured in such a wa\. that the occupants of the vehicle cannot hip easily identified through that window- from outside the vehicle. The law provides better visibility for ihe driver as well as allowing other motorist to observe the driver’s actions. By I* ing able to see the other driver, motorists can often determine intended vehicle movement. In addition, the law provides unrestricted vision of drivers and passengers by Police Officers as they approach the vehicle during traf lie stops. The tinted window law ap plies to ail vehicles and the violator is subject to a maxi mum fine of $500.00 upon conv iction.

their money over at least 12 times before it reaches anyone else. Blacks turn money over in the black community only once. “Black Afro-Americans control 140 billion dollars in this country and with that economic power we give American economic stability!” Black people, according to the journalist, need to desegregate themselves from the underclass in American society. He defined the black middle class as “those who are one to two pay weeks away from welfare. The underclass are those isolated morally and economically from society.” ’Thirty percent of unemployed youth are on drugs and the crime that this generates will come to the black community first. It is, therefore, to the advantage of the black middle class to take a hand in helping the underclass, and this black support is needed since it takes black people to understand black people.” Brown also warned against hatred, labeling it counterproductive. In this vein, he quoten an African proverb: “It doesn't matter what you call me, only what I answer to." In receiving the Frederick Douglass Award, Ms. Davis was cited “in recognition of the dedication to service and the forth right position she has always taken where the interests of her constituency is concerned since serving on the Board of School Commis-1 Board of School Commissioners. Whether it is leading a fight against violence in the schools or ensuring that lower level employees rights are protected, or providing for minority contractor participation as vendors and suppliers to Indianapolis Schools, she has demonstrated exemplary leadership and commitment to the struggles of black and poor people.”
