Last Saturday was a busy day for Recorder Women Sponsors when they met to submit their final report for the “1979 Recorder Christmas Cheer Fund” at the home of Mrs. Paul A. Batties. The medley of beautiful Christmas songs and organ selections by Mr. O.B. Manning against a background of glittering Christmas trees and other seasonal decorations, created a festive atmosphere for the many enthusiastic sponsors and honored guests, who were present to enjoy the occasion. Rev. Carl Hatfield, accompanied by his lovely wife Virginia Hatfield, was the guest speaker who gave an interesting and challenging talk on the subject, “going on with Life with Christ." Mrs. Batties, the hostess, introduced several honored guests: Deputy Major Joseph A. Slash, who was called upon to bring greetings and best wishes to sponsors for their earnest efforts, on behalf of the city’s needy families; SMrs. Joyce Revere; Mrs. LeRoy Torain; Mr. Frank Eowtu, Ms. Phyllis Griffin; Ms. Helen Louise Negley; Mr. and Mrs. Paul McClure; Ms. Wendy

Boyle; Ms. Mary Rowley; Ms. Yvonne Long; Ms. Brenda Walls and Dr. and Mrs. Russell A. Lane. During the meeting, individual financial reports from sponsors were made. In the absence of Mrs. Joseph Butler, secretary to the Sponsors, reports were made by Mrs. Roosevelt Drane who was assisted by Mrs. Audrey Buford, Mrs. Bernice Torain and Mrs. Wylean Sanders. A statement of the total amount collected was presented by Mrs. Buford. The Sponsors were encouraged by Mrs. Perdue, chairman of Sponsors to strive over the week-end, to reach their goal for the “1979 Recorder Christmas Cheer Fund.” Mrs. Batties, Director, praised the Sponsors for the excellent response they have received from the community. She thanked all of the participants who contributed so much to the inspiration of the day. The speaker, Rev. Hatfield; the guest artists; Mr. Manning; Ms. Long and Ms. Brenda Walls, all accomplished musicians for their beautiful inspirational music; Dr. Russell A. Lane for an impressive

benediction; Mrs. Cecil Hall and Mrs. Watson for the delicious luncheon they prepared. The Sponsors were inspired by the presence of the guests and by the fact that friends all over the city had been so kind in their giving inorder to make this year’s fund raising possible. Many families will be made happier this Christmas because of the work of the women Sponsors. Mrs. Fred Perdue is the Chairman. Mrs. Louise

Terry Batties is the Director. Mrs. George I. Temple, Staff Coordinator; Mr. Georgge Thompson, Business Manager; Mr. Marcus C. Stewart, Sr., Editor and Publisher of The Indianapolis Recorder and Treasurer of Recorder Charities, Inc. Layaways the answer to 1* percent credit card interest and a flood of bills after Jan. 1, and a bigger and better hiding place for the kdis' Christmas gifts'.' Or another overspending trap for the unwary holiday shop per? According to marketing professor Thomas P. Hast ad of the Indiana I'niversity School of Business at Indianapolis, using layaways can be a boon or a bane to your holiday buying Mattie plan. "Somebody you have to pay." Hustad cautions against overbuying. If you started shopping early, and continue shopping until Christ mas, the net result might be buying three times as much as you planned to buy. So beware of getting caught up in the spirit of the season and overextending. One way to do this is to keep track of what you have in layaway. Record the name of the store, the merchant, and the product and keep receipts on what you buy. says Hustad. The layaway user should always note the contract terms. Failure to adhere to the terms of the contract can cancel the agreement. The charge for lavaway should be identified in advance. Layaway charges range from none at all to a minima! paperwork charge of 50f, to a percentage of the sale. Get a receipt for each payment on the

layaway. "If the merchant is in finan cia! difficulty, the customer can lose the merchandise and the money paid on it," says Hustad. This is the best reason to know your merchant when using layaways. Th* merchant must also supply the goods in the condition they were in when placed in layaway. Don't accept soiled or dusty goods. Also, if the item goes on sale while you have it m layaway, ciieck to see if the store will honor the sale price. "Layaway is often used by people who can't or won't use other forms of credit." says Hustad. "It can also be a good wav to buy items that you won't need immediately. You might want to place next spring's lawnmower in layaway, for example." For those of you who are up to your holly in layaway hock, get ready the day of reckoning is neiy. If you have overextended, approach the credit manager and see what can be worked out, advises Hustad. If you can outline a program of repayment, the merchant is likely to be reason able. Remember, however, you can lose your layaw ay if you fail to pay the balance in full on the date specified in the contract. The man was insane because he was possessed of devils which lived in him and made him act crazily. He. had been chained so that he might not harm anyone, but in his mad frenzy he had burst his chains. And he ripped off his clothes. He spoke to Jesus saying

Jesus, Son of God, what have I to do with you? I call upon you not to torment me. For Jesus had spoken, calling upon whatever unclean spirit was in the man to come out, for in this way Jesus knew that the man might understand His wish to heal him. And make him normal again. But the man only shouted louder. In his madness, he frightened a herd of swine that were feeding by the lake. Jesus caused the unclean spirits to go into the herd of swine. The swine, driven to madness, ran wildly in a panic into the water and drownded. Jesus, the great physician, by a power known only to Him drove out the devils from this man. For the man became quiet and did not shout any more, and sat by the feet of Jesus and permitted himself to be clothed. At this time of the year, the world is celebrating the birth of Jesus, Son of God who is the great physician. * * * Lula Bean Federated Club meets Saturday, December 22. in Foster Lounge, 2154 N.
