William Taylor, Tiger star of 60s; rites in Michigan

Funeral services for William C. Taylor, Jr., 34, Romulus, Michigan, a former All-State athlete at Crispus Attucks High School, will be conducted Friday in C.W. Morris Funeral Home, Highland Park, Mich. Taylor was killed in a car accident November 26 in the Detroit suburb of Romulus. He was a member as an underclassman of the 1959 At* ticks state basketball chamr mship team, but established nis most prolific mark as a Tiger athlete while competing for then Attucks head football coach Graham Martin. Martin had nothing but words of gratitude in remembering his former All-State defensive player in 1961, who nearly single-handidly led the Tigers to an astounding 7-1-1 record that season. “He was like a son to me. We were very close, and even after he graduated from Attucks, we would go to college games together when he was in town,” a saddened Martin recalled. “I could never find enough kind words to explain how empty I feel in hearing of this tragedy," expressed Martin. A native of Indianapolis and a resident until 1963, Taylor grew up at 509 W. 28th, and attended Antioch Baptist Church, then located at 13th and Missouri streets. At the time of his death, he was employed in Michigan as an agent with Equitable Life Insurance. He received his B.S. degree from Murray State

the life of a “traveling evangelist” spending his time, not in the pulpit, but ministering from door to door. He died November 14 at the age of 67. Behind he leaves such quotes as “you don't have to pastor a church to be fruitful” as a minister, and the scores of young people he personally helped find employment. Remarks, favorable as expected, came from Rev. John R. Stevenson, Central District Baptist Association moderator, and Rev. C.V. Jeter, Indianapolis Baptist Ministers Alliance president. Rev. Jones

REV. WILLIAM I. JONES It’s hard saying good-bye to a favored minister and especially heart jerking when it’s a clergyman who kept himselp above reproach. So were the sentiments of hundreds of mourners who packed Sunny Mount Missionary Baptist Church November 18 for services honoring Rev. William Isaiah Jones. Somehow, through his dedicated “calling” Rev. Jones since moving here in 1953 endeared himself to thousands. Upon his arrival here he wasted no time. He immediately began pastoring True Vine Missionary Baptist and remained there until 1967 when he organized True Light Missionary Baptist Chkurch, being congregational leader three years. After that. Rev. Jones chose REV. JOHN A. HALL The Reverend John A. Hall, 71, Second Baptist Church Pastor, died November 20 in Wishard Hospital. Services were conducted November 27 at the church he pastored since 1932. A native of Finleyville, Pa., Reverend Hall lived here 54 years-receiving his bachelor of arts and bachelor of science degrees from Louisville Municipal College and Simmons University (Louisville), respectively. Ordained since 1928, Reverend Hall was presented an honorary doctor of divinity degree from Simmons in 1954. He is survived by his wife, LUian.
