TEETHING: Far beyond the days of cutting teeth, heavyweight champion Leon Spinks displays dentures which adds to a big grin for newsmen following his arrival in New Orleans last week for the September 15 rematch with Muhammad A Li. In right photo, Aii modestly grits teeth after a sparring session at his Deer Lake, Pa. training camp. Expected to gross more than $7 million, Ali predicts the fight will be more exciting than his “Thrilla in Manila" encounter with Joe Frazier in 1975.

*Hoosier Gridiron’ gives S.B. Washington No. I nod

South Bend Washington receives the nod from the new "Hoosier Gridiron" Magazine to capture the 1978 Class AAA Indiana high school football championship. Indiana sportswriters also tabbed defending champion Plymouth, Crawfordsville and Jasper in a tight race for the Class AA title, and Lawrenceburg as the clearcut choice for the Class A crown. The ‘Hoosier Gridiron” premiere issued re caps all 12 high school football districts and a college preview. With 19 lettermen and blazing speed from last year’s 10-2 squad, SB Washington ranks at the head of the class in the sixth annual IHSAA football derby. Washington won the title in 1973. Besides SB W'ashington in District 2, other likely AAA district champs include: Hammond, No. 1; Lawrence Central, No. 3, and Martinsville, No. 4. The Class AA title looks like a toss-up between three teams headed by Plymouth. Should the Rockies tumble, Crawfordsville is given the edge over Jasper for the crown. Plymouth lost superstar Pete Buchanan, but returns one of the most physical teams in the state. Crawfordsville has tremenddous backfield talent, and Fans release displeasure at Garden decision NEW YORKWithout a doubt, the ring wars have returned to Madison Square Garden, For after 11,000 spectators viewed a middleweight headliner here last Friday, a near riot actually began. The meele was prompted, when Puerto Rican Vito Antuofermo was handed a 10-round decision over Brooklyn partisan Willie Classen in their middleweight encounter. After the ring announcer disclosed the results, the crowd immediately began to boo, then showered the ring with bottles, umbrellas and other confetti. Antuofermo, Classen, their managers and officials reacted quickly, diving under the ring. Fans reportedly continued to storm the ring, commandereer&d the microphone, knocked down barriers and threw chairs. Several of the spectators were arrested, while a few others required hospitalization. Nonetheless, Garden president Mile Burke said the fracas would have no effect on the future of boxing at the Garden.. “It’s just one of those things. It happened and now it’s over," Burke said. Bulldogs CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16 he plays on all special teams. Last season Shaw intercepted one pass, returned 17 punts for 118 yards, and 10 kick-offs for 229 yards, earning ICC AllConference first team recognition for his play. “It was a very big honor for me to be elected captain," commented Shaw. “It really makes me feel good to know that my teammates think that highly of me.”

Jasper offers a strong winning tradition--and rugged lineman Tom Resenbeck. The writers’ selections in Class AA include Plymouth, No. 5; Elwood, over Delta and Delphi in No. 6; Crawfordsville over Speedway, No. 7; and Jasper outdistancing Clarksville and Tell Citv in tough No. 8. Lawrenceburg looms as the top powerhouse in Class A. The Tigers lost out last year via a “forfeit” but the talent for another title is there. Lawrenceburg is a heavy favorite in District 12. Other predicted winners include Seeger, No. 9; W T oodlan, No. 10, and Sheridan, No. 11. Lafayette Centeral Catholic and Paoli also rate as formidable contenders for “A” honors. The new magazine-the first devoted exclusively to a comprehensive coverage of Hoosier football--is produced by the publishers of- Billy Keller’s annual “Hoosier Basketball" Magzaine. Mail orders should be sent to “Hoosier Gridiron”, 3737 N. Meridian, Indianapolis, IN 46208. The price is $1.50 plus 50 cents for handling and mailing.

City CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16 would at worst--a fired Blue Devil defense. Marshall’s Eddie Bopp proved what results real togetherness can often reap. Laboring as a bus driver, and picking up team members at an elementary school during preseason work-outs. Bopp’s defending city co-champions man handled Scecina (34-7) on the Patriot’s home soil. Using a disciplined attack, the Patriots scored in every period -went to the air only twice - ironically scoring aerials. Bopp, nontheless, expressed optimism toward the remaining schedule...“Should we make it through our first four tests,” he confided during an interview a few weeks ago. Of big interest is the second test Friday, when Marshall host Woodard’s Titans Led by All-City scamper Andy Howard, Chatard rolled to a 29-18 victory over Roncalli. Howard amassed well over half of the Trojans’ total yardage. Defending Class AA champ, Ritter counted on a battle with somewhat feared Manual, and no less were the offering^. Plagued with fumbles and a determined Redskins defense, Ritter could muster only a lone fourth-quarter touchdown to salvage an otherwise, 13-6 defeat.

We chased CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16 four-game series opener with Springfield for an 8-7 setback. The loss at that time placed the tribe a game and a half behind the Triplets. As action resumed Tuesday for both teams, the Indians could expect a fair chance to overcome the Evansville edge, via any combination of an Indians’ sweep of their remaining two games, and an Evansville loss in one or both of their last two games. The eventual champion will face Western Division champ, Omaha in a play-off series to determine the A.A. pennant winner. Meanwhile, the waning regular season continues to be highlited by outfielder John (Champ) Summers’ quest for a (rare) triple crown. If successful, Summers would be the first Indians’ player ever to lead the league in batting, RBI’s, and homeruns in the same season. He would become only the fourth in A.A. history. Slugging partner Arturo DeFreites joins Summers for establishing modern Indians’ marks-tied with Summers in homers (32). It is the first time in Indians’ baseball history two Tribesmen have hit as many as 30 homers in the same season. Forecasted prior to the season as one of the teams to beat in the A.A., the Indians' .287 team batting average is tops in the Association, and Harry Spilman (.296) is bidding to join Summers, DeFreites and centerfield Lynn Jones in giving the Tribe four .300 hitters for the first time in 30 years. With a steady downpour of rain throught the day Wednesday, Tribe skipper Roy Majtyka was set to send pitcher Charley Leibrandt (2-1) against Springfield’s Danny O’Brien (4-1). The Indians’ 135-game season is scheduled to conclude Thursday with Awards Ceremony Night-and hopefully, a champaign guzzling celebration afterwards. No word has been received,

NFL expanded CONTINUED FROM PAGE 16 down and 10 yards. The more than 1,500 yards disparity in the passing games from 1967 and last season was the suggested prod behind the NFL’s major rule changes for this season. In 1967, Joe Namath led the New York Jets to 3,845 aerial yards. Last season, the Buffalo Bills were the NFL’s top passing club with 2,530 yards. but parent organization Cincinnati may be grateful to call up the services after season’s end of some of those loaded bats the Tribe has carried of late. Having lost nearly 75 percent of their games in the last few weeks, the Reds’ stretch run for the National League Western Division crown might welcome some hefty swinging.

Since manager Jim Fregosi replaced fired Dave Garcia (mid-way through the season), Bostock has swung for a blistering .350 norm. While the challenge of possibly capturing the batting crown confronts Bostock, the Angels are involved in one of the closest divisional races in the majors. The team began play in the American League Western Division this week a few percentage points ahead of defending champ, Kansas City.
