The group, especially lead singer, pianist and sax player

LIONEL RICHIE, has mastered the art of writing mgs that will milk screams and shouts of adulation from m audience. Richie’s ballads were touching as usual. He was raved m be went through "Say Yeah,” “Easy.” "Zoom.” "Just to Bs Close to You,” and ‘Three Times a Lady.” Rattling nrfM hoarseness and repeated female screams, he sang the latter while playing a white piano perched atop a hydraulic lift which sat between the drum kit and a huge, mock platinum “Commodores” logo. He was bathed in ruby lights. Even “SUppery When Wet," a 1974 single, was applauded vividly. A Commodores concert is not unlike, but far recsevsd from the normal modern-day rhythm and blues eosnert. Sure there was joints being passed in the audience, and there were smoke bombs, confetti, and chants from the stage like “party, party.” but the accent was on good, dean fun. No profanity or pro-drug lyrics. Just a nice musical
trip.

Drummer WALTER “SWEET CLYDE” ORANGE was heard more than once to shout spiritless, drawn-out phrases like “y’all ready to party.” while the other members sought for nearly 30 seconds their places on a dark stage to begin the next song. As the MSA stop was about the 18th oa an
