NBA 1978 All-Star voting as interasting as ever
A record number of votes - possibly reaching two million - are expected in the fourth year of casting ballots by the fans for the 1978 NBA All-Star Game. The balloting is conducted through a cooperative effort of NBA teams and Trident Sugar less Gum. In the first year of voting about ’00,000 ballotwere cast. Th< following ar that number climbed to 600,000 and then for last season’s game in Milwaukee, which the W * st won by 125-124, the total shot up to approximately 1,250,000. For the game to be played in Atlanta on February 5, the voting is expected to reach the 1,750.000 !c and it. could
reach two million.
In response to this growing popularity, the number of Sallots sent by '1. -'dent to nch increased .. _%j‘ 250,000. It should be emphasized that each team re- . '• ^ •• of ba is up to i. iai-o to make the most of them. Last year the Denver Nuggets’ David Thompson set an all-time record by getting 319,047 vot< s. It is interesting to note that three of the four top vote-getters were forwards -Thompson, and the Phila delphia 76ers’ Julius Erving (310,517) and George McGinnis (246,829). The only one to crash
preferences are combined with those of the men who masterminded the teams. Like the fans, these experts do not always agree either. For example, last season, the coaches voted for 42 players to fill the 14 positions. Fan ballots will be distributed and collected
in the 22 NBA arenas and in thousands of retail outlets in those cities and other geographic locations. They will be tabulated by Trident. Each ballot carries 88 nominees, sent in by the 22 TURN TO PAGE 15

NBA All-star games highlights
By BILL SMITH Always start our program with a “positive approach.” Emphasize the “foul factor” when coaching defense-en-courage team to work at getting fouls down to an average of 10 per game. Start practice with a fun drill and end practice with a fun drill. Use the “spot shooting” drill 5 minutes each day....any drill that requires shooting....emphasize “FORM”. Emphasize the proper type of pass and when to use it....every chance you get. .All forward cutting must step into the lane making a V-cut. KEY: OFFENSIVE CONCEPT Big men enjoy making the basket cut from back court and slam dunking. (Use the slam dunk drill.) When there is no fast break, encourage your players to balance the floor and go to necessary offense. Anytime a man is in shooting range against our defense....he must be forced to pick the ball up. It’s how much your players know about the game that counts, not how much the coach knows. Learn from everybody and imitate no one. Quick ball and man movement takes away defensive player's vision. Emphasize five passes before
shooting against a set defense unless its a lay-up. Get the ball from baseline to baseline fast. Just about any defense will play the first pass, maybe the second pass, but very few play the third pass. Defensively we will not try to take the ball unless you get careless. The offensive man is to make the defensive player play him the full thirty-two minutes of a game. Our pressure defense and offense take their toll about the third or fourth quarter....so be patient. Pressing game is best taught on the playing floor. Against a zone encourage the players never to pass the ball unless someone is guarding him....TRY TCI MAKE TWO DEFENSIVE f MEN PLAY HIM. When the ball goes inside against a zone, drop both guards down to the baseline...any time ball is shot weakside guards drop back to cover fast break. Defensively, anytime there is a missed shot, we apply our press at half court.. When player shoots a “glass shot" the ball must hit the glass on its downward flight. On the fast break, emphasize getting the ball to mid-court as fast as possible, then slowing down to read defense. Designate one man always to take the ball out-of-bou: ds

when running the fast break. (Probably the center because he is the closest.) Work on getting the ball inbounds quickly. Make sure that your pressattack runs right into your main offense. Keep a count on “post feedk” during practice and during the game. (KEY TO INSIDE GAME). Play your best shooters on the same side of the floor.
