Colioh ‘Champ’ Chaney is ‘Man of the Year’

Champ’, as Colion Chaney, is called by everyone, is a sergeant on the Indianapolis Police Department and is assigned to youth activity at the St. Rita, CYO boxing gymnasium, located at 19th and N. Arsenal. Obviously there are many youth workers employed by various agencies doing an outstanding job in their area. However, I feel what sets - champ’ apart from the others is his total and complete dedication to his job. Champs job is

not his vocation, but rather his Life. Not only does Champ keep upwards of 65 young, potential delinquents, off the streets, he gives them purpose and - meaning in what might otherwise be a very empty existance. Chaney teaches these youngsters to box and those who desire, compete in the various boxing tournaments. Further testimony to his effectiveness is that in the 1977 - Golden Gloves program, C-

City has some great women sport officials

Women from Indianapolis are making great officials these days. These women who are proving that they can do the job as an official in sports are: JENNIFER PATTERSON, who is qualified to call basket ball, baseball, track and volley ball. TIRESA WYNNS is qualified to call basketball, volleyball and track.

SUE BINZE--basketball and volleyball. JOANN GRISSOM- - basketball, volleyball, swimming, track and baseball. Mrs. Grissom has worked track meets for 13 years and man how can you top that. These women have done a great job and should be given additonal opportunities. Good luck girls!

hamp entered 33 youngsters in three catagories and took a record number of victories, with several of his open class boxers winning all expense paid trips to Hawaii to compete nationally, later this month. A visit to Champ’s gymn, proves beyond doubt as to his effectiveness as an influence and leader among the ‘street youth.’ At no time you will hear profanity of any sort, which is remarkable in itself, when you take into account the background of almost every young man in his charge. Everyone in his gym is called ‘Champ’ just as Chaney is called. Whether a boy competes in boxing or just hangs around the gymn, he is called Champ’, by everyone. No surnames are used. The effect is amazing. Additionally, what helps - make Champ the outstanding candidate for this award is his untiring efforts. These boys just don't happen into the gymn (where they might, in fact, get slapped around). Champ cruises the streets in his 12 TURN TO PAGE 17

READY FOR SEASON: George Foster, Ken Griffey, Santo Alcala, and Ed Armbrister [from left], all formerly of the Indianapolis Indians, and all who finished with a good season last year, are hoping to lead the Cincinnati Reds to another World Series title. Foster, the power hitting leftfielder, is coming off a great season in which he hit .307, had 38 home runs and drove in over 100 runs. Griffey, the quick, power

hitting righfielder, had a big year last season, hitting . 335 and making the big plays in the field. Alcala had a great year with the Reds, winning 11 and losing 6nly 4 as a righthanded pitcher. The other former Indianapolis player is Armbrister, who plays the outfield. He is the best hunter on the team. He hit .286 as a sub.

Raymond (Ray) W illiams had a good boxing career

Raymond Williams began his boxing career in the mid 1960s at the age of 15, under the training of Richard Collins and John Nelvie. From there his career, blossomed. In 1965 he won the 135 pound, sub-novice title. He competed in the Atterbury Summer Gloves, winning his division. In ‘66 he was the 147-pound novice champion, and the following year he won

the 139-pound open title and was named the Golden Gloves' outstanding boxer. He finished third in national competition that year. SOMETHING IN COMMON: Ray Crowe [left], who piloted Crispus Attucks to back-to-back state championships in 1955 and ’56, meets Coach Bill Smith of Broad Ripple High School. Crowe is presently director of Parks and Recreation for the City of Indianapolis. See story below. [Recorder photo by# Marcell J. Williams]

What takes place when a veteran coach, winner of two state high school championships and once runner-up, meets a up-and-coming high school coach? Advice, advice, and more advice. That’s what Ray Crowe gave Broad Ripple Coach William (Bill) Smith when they met recently. Crowe led the Tigers to the final game of the state tourney three years running, winning the crown in ‘55 and ‘56, and placing in the runnerup position in ‘57. The ‘55 team was the first from Indianapolis to win the title,- and the following year they were unbeaten. Crow’s teams lost only one game in two years and compiled a record of 29-1 in ‘55 and a perfect 31-0 mark the following season. The final score of the ‘55 title tilt was Attucks 97, Gary Roosevelt 74. A fellow by the name of Oscar Robertson led scoring in that contest with 30 points and Willie Merriweather added 21, and Shedrick Mitchell. 18. The ‘56 final score was Attucks, 79, LaFayette Jefferson, 57. That team was the greatest of all time. The ‘Big O’ had 29 points, Stanford Patton added 19, Edgar Searcy 15, Bill Brown 16, and Albert Maxey 6. The Tigers added another title in ‘59 under the late Bill Garrett in ‘59 beating Kokomo 92-54 with Bobby Edmonds leading the way with 19 points.
