THE INDIANAPOLIS RECORDER p AGE 13 SATURDAY, MAY 24, 1975 A &P Division ends store closing program, new openings planned
HABARI GANI and Greetings! TINA TURNER, one of the movers and shakers in the music world may be shaking and moving her marriage by going out on her own. She has been regarding her husband as a sort of ‘fifth child’. Tina says that she has always been in there helping him but since she’s filmed “Tommy” a film in which she plays the “Acid Queen,” she’s learned that she can do quite a few things without him. Tina knows that Ike will miss her, but he will be proud of her as well. *** A $2,000 scholarship in honor of Gram ray-award winning musician STEVIE WONDER has been established at Howard University by the Motown Record Corporation. The scholarship will be in the name of Stevie’s new-born duaghter, AISHA ZAKIA MORRIS. According to Motown, the award is being named for the child because “she symobllzes his creative future, his productive present and his hope for freedom, justice, and equality for all mankind.” *** In less than two years, BLUE MAGIC has risen from the street corner of Philadelphia straight to the top of the charts Independent CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 discharged” while he struggled with Richardson who, according to the policeman, had to be bodily forced from his automobile. Adding to the confusion surrounding the incident, however, is the fact that Richardson was shot while attempting to reach his hand into his right rear pocket. Which was found to contain nothing more deadly than an Afro-comb. In pie later reports, on the snooting, Blake reportedly said' that Richardson was shot during a struggle. Several questionable aspects to the shooting remain unanswered—including the lack of a plausible explanation for the “accidentail” discharge of a double-action ,38-c a liber revolver which required “considerable pressure” on the ** trigger before the weapon can be fired “unless the weapon has already been cocked.” The Recorder has been unsuccessful in attempts to learn whether or not there is an existing police department policy governing the practice of cocking a weapon in situations similar to the one that led to the Richardson youth’s death. In a letter to Mayor Richard Lugar and Police Chief Kenneth B. Hale, A.D. Pinckney Jr. president of th Indianapolis NAACP and Williard B. Ransom, the NAACP’s legal redress chairman, said: In the past, the Indianapolis Branch of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People, has been alarmed at the shootings of black citizens by white members of the Indianapolis Deoartment— most under very questionable circumstances. The NAACP views the latest killing of a black citizen as a represensible act without any justification. The NAACP believes that this killing indicates an irrational racist attitude, harbored by some members of the police force. Also, the shotting is further indication of improper training and Injudicious use of firearms. “The action of the officer reflects upon the entire police department. We - feel that the department has not lived up to its training responsibility in scleen its applicants, nor in training its officers in the proper use of firearms. “The Indianapolis Branch of the NAACP has asked its attorneys in the Marlon County Bar Association to investigate the killing of Mr. Richardson. The NAACP will present the results of this investigation to the proper fedeal authorities in order that the black community, may obtain some relief from a racist police force. Dr. Pinckney told The Recorder on Wednesday that neither the Mayor or Hale had responded to the letter. Kelly’s action followed a recommendation by Dr. Dennis J. Nicholas who commented, “Although in my personal opinion the shooting was accidential, officially I think It is a good idea to let the grand jury review It.” The prosecutor said that all persons Involved In the shooting would be subpeonasd to appear before the grand jury. At this point, further police action on the shooting appears to hinge on the appearance of a “mysterious” white woman who reportedly witnessed the shooting and has indicated a willingness to “tell it like It is.’ Police investigators and the dead youth's parents, Mr. and Mrs. Tandy Richardson, > 2708 Brouse, have been unsuccessful, so far in efforts to locate the woman. At the request of the parents s final determination by the police department into the shooting has been delayed until May 27. ~
throughout America. They have cut two gold records, the single “Sideshow” and their debut album, “Blue Magic. Their second Atlantic Records Lp, “The Magic of the Blue” is breaking sales records daily. In addition, Blue Magic received gold records for their work on the Rolling Stones album “It’s Only Rock and Roll.” The five Philadelphians, Ted Mills, Vernon Sawyer, Keith Reaton, Wendell Sawyer, and Richard Pratt make up the dynamic Sound produced by Blue Magic. They are now conducting a vigorous schedule of personal appearances and recording commitments, including a duo effort with Margie Josep for a forthcoming Atlantic Records Release. *** With their sons gaining acceptance by fans of all muscial taste, with their plans to return to Las Vegas, with their new album being released, and with their ever increasing likelihood of achieving gold status, it appears 1975 will be remembered as the “YEAR OF TAVARES.” After many years of climbing the show business ladder, the brothers Tavares are reacting to their current successes with a mixture of disbelief and cautious optimism. Yet, even during their precious free time between concert appearances and recording sessions, each one is keeping busy. A naturally born actor, Butch who is married to Lola Falana, has been eyeing several film roles. While Pooch has been working on his cars, Ralph has been moving into his New England Home. Tiny, who raises Great Danes, has been spending his weekends inspecting farms in Vermont. And Chubby is continuing to develop his music and singing talents, with an ear to eventually producing other artists himself. Tavares is currently nearing the completion of their third Captiol album, produced as always by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter. It is titled “In The City.” While they are funloving individuals, Tavares is serious when it comes to their career and their quest for longevity. They have st out to develop a string of pop hits, as Is already in the R&B market, without forsaking their firm roots in Soul. *** THE TEMPTATIONS have named a successor to Damon Harris. He is Glen Carl Leonard, 27 years old, from Washington, D.C. The soft-spoken Sagitarian is a veteran of four vocal groups. He was touring with the Reflections when he learned that the Temps were in the market for someone. *** Columbia recording artists THE MANHATTANS have released a new single entitled “Hurt”, while the O’JAYS are putting together a nationwide tour which includes appear ances in all the major cities throughout the U.S. That’s all.

Refugee program distorted, Rev. Jesse Jackson says
WASHINGTON - (NBNS) - The Rev. Jesse Jackson, last week, called for an end to the resettling of Vietnamese refugees in this country, saying “we are not doing the Vietnamese a favor by bringing them into a hostile environment that’s in a depression.” The program, he said, is “distorted and misfocused.” The leader of Operation PUSH (People United to Save Humanity), lashed out at the effort by the U.S. government charging that the refugees would be treated as “wall trophies,” here. “Having a Vietnamese maid will be the chic thing,” he said. “And people will say, T am a good person because I have a Vietnamese orphan or a Vietnamese grass-cutter.’ ” The country-preacher, as he is popularly known, told a news conference that with unabating unemployment here, it would be foolish to try to “compensate for massive guilt caused by the failures of American policy fin Vietnam).” He denounced as foolhardy, “the notion that the Provisional Revolutionary Government will chop off people’s necks,” adding that that is based “on an unfounded state of panic.” Jackson declared that it was “profoundly disrespectful and insulting” to assume that the new regime would not provide for the people’s needs. “We therfore urge that those activities surrounding the Vietnamese refugee settlement in this country be suspended immediately,” he said. He charged that the refugee

Malik, 41 was hanged at the Royal Jail for the murder of his cousin, Joseph Skerritt, i barber and one of his followers. There were no demonstrations of other incidents to mark the hanging. The bodies of Skerritt, 24, and British divorcee Gail Ann Benson, 27, had been unearthed in the garden behind Malik’s suburban Arima home in February, 1972, a month after they had died. Both had been hacked to death with a machete. Malik was also charged with the murder of a one time member of the British Parliament, but he was never tried on that count. Malik had established a commune in Trinidad following his return from England in 1970. His execution, opposed by an international Save Malik Committee that included such wellknown black activists as Angela Davis and Dick Gregory, came after Malik’s attorney had exhausted every legal appeal available. They were not sure Mr. Stark could add to that part of thecaucus. “It’s not just a question of our black constituency,” said one spokes mu, “because some white members of Congress have more black constituents than some of us.” But there are indications that Mr. Stark will be invoted to hare some part in caucus activities. “R’s important that we in the caucus don't become isolated.” Mr. Dellums said.

U.S. Court CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 et seq. According to the decree all facilities, accomodations or privileges of the Arena are made available to, and will be used by Negro patrons upon the same basis and under the same conditions as they are made available to and used by white patrons. The litigations in the U.S. District Court originated in an order by the Indiana Area Armed Forces Disciplinary Control Board. A tavern in the area and the rink in Kokomo were placed off limits by the Disclpillnary Control Board, because the two establishments practiced racial discrimination, according to Army Major James T. Chester, Jr., board president. Named in the order were the Pipe Creek Falls Club Tavern and the Kokomo Skating Arena, as the result of complaints which alleged both practiced racial discrimination against black service men by refusing them admittance to service. The board was established by the Department of defense to examine local conditlonathat affect toe health, welfare and morale of Armed Forces personnel. The concerned board is made up of military representatives from Grlssen Air Force Base,, Crane Naval Ammunition Depot, Indianapolis Naval Avionics Facility and Fort Harrison. Civilian advisory members are from Indiana health and law enforcement agencies. The Human Relations Commission (Kokomo), Miss Jeanne F. Mays, executive* director, explored also or investigated all charges of racial discrimination involving toe three establishments noted.
project was an “immature” way of handling American guilt feelings provoked by involvement in Vietnam. “The politics is what stinks. The hypocrisy is what stinks," he said. “The President flies out to San Francisco to hold a Vietnamese orphan in his arms, but won’t walk three blocks down from the White House to hold a Black or a Puerto Rican baby.” Jackson rejected the claim that his position was ungenerous. He said that he has called also for an extension of aid to rebuild Vietnam and for diplomatic recognition of the Communist regime in Saigon. “Free” elderly riders on school board buses are not “allowable” A spokesman for the Indianapolis School Board cited Pitolic Law #218 in turning down a request to allow senior citizens to ride public school buses to Metro system bus stops. The request was presented before the school board, last week by Virginia Jones representing, Senior Enterprise, Inc. She observed that adequate transporation to jobs is a major problem of elderly persons able to work. Board president, Paul E. Lewis noted Public Law #218, states: “ No person shall operate, or permit the operation, of any school bus on any highway in Indiana for any private purpose or for any purpose other than transportation of elig ole schOoltbhildren to and from school.;..” A public information assistant for the school system, Nancy Brown, observed a 1974 supplement to Burns’ Statutes allows use of school buses by senior citizens’ groups only if buses are operated under transportation contracts and not owned in whole or in part by a public agency such as the Indianapolis Public Schools. CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 housing programs. Mr. Morris has for several years charged that a major cause of deterioration in the inner cities, where blacks are concentrated, has been the practice by leading institutions to discriminate against such areas. The result is that racial minorities and poor whites have been left to the mercy of unscrupulous speculators whose get-rich-quick schemes have hastened the spread of abandoned and delapidated housing. - But should the disclosure bill become law, Mr. Mitchell said, “the information provided through compliance with requirements will be useful as data gathered by the United States Commission on civil rights has been, and continues to be, in giving facts that sig>port widely held beliefs about the nature and extent of discrimination against minorities.”
