BLACK WORLD VIEW Let the dead bury the dead
The question has been put to us: “Is school Intergratlon dead?" But even If we accept the word “Intergratlon” In all of Its ambiguous, whitedominated meanings, the real question Is this: Was public school intergratlon ever alive In America? Did the U.S. Supreme Court of 1954-44 — or any other official body of white America since then — ever foresee or desire a society that could really be called “Intergrated?” It we use the best possible sense of that word, did white America ever want a society In which black and white and other men held power and responsibility commensurate with their wisdom, their moral stature, their life experience and their proportion within the population? Did the courts envision school boards In the blackbelt south controlled by the black majorities of their local communities? Did they look forward to black superintendents running the school systems of scores of cities with black majorities or pluralities? Did they see American
history, social science, arts and literature totally challenged and transformed by the black witness? Did they gladly foresee black students who would emerge from such schools to transform a racist society? Tbose are the prior questions. And the answers are obviously no. America has never believed In humane and just “intergratlon," and therefore It could not posslbley “Integrate” Its children or their schools. For a society that really believed In such a black-defined future would not be living with what are essentially the same schools it had 18 years ago. Indeed, what we really see after almost two decades Is that It is the American public school system which is dead, not “integration.” Therefore, neither busing nor anti-busing are real Issues for us, and the heated arguments around them are most often white smoke screens. They really serve to camouflage the fact that Amerlca desires no real* justice, humanity or power for black people In Its courts, its
Mother tells crime committee drug-crazed son killed sister
BY MICHAEL D. PETIT National Black News Service MIAMI— Choking back tears, Mrs. Prescole Beneby told a congressional committee here how her son Alvin, strung out on heroin, strangled his baby sister while she beat helplessly on a locked bedroom door. “I was In my bedroom and one of the children, they called for me and said: 'Mom, he has Beverly.' And then I heard the screaming. “I want toward the bedroom and it was locked. I tried to get In but I could nt and there he was strangling my little baby girl ... I could hear her voice screaming until she could not say anything else... Later on, she was dead.’ Mrs. Beneby, mother of six children at the time of the tragic episode, testified along with two other parents before the Select Committee o n Crime of the U.S. House of Representatives. The committee, headed by Chairman Claude Pepper (D-Fla.), was In Miami go gather evidence to bring to Washington in order to get the Federal Government to release funds to assist school systems a r o u n dthe the country to check narcotics

addicts and drug abusers and find help for them. Mrs. Beneby, a black woman, was representative of the parents who have gone to schools, police and courts in a futile effort to find treatment for their children who have acquired drug habits. “Where my son is now,’ Mrs. Beneby said, choking back tears, “this is the place I tried to get him. But I seem to have failed to get help. My daughter, she had to be killed before he got the help he needed.” Alvin, now 19, became a heroin addict while a student at Miami - Jackson Senior High School which, like most high schools In Miami, are known to students as illegal drug stores where students buy and sell a wide range of drugs and narcotics. Alvin is now a patient at South Florida State Hospital, an Institution where Mrs. Beneby attempted to place him prior the night he came home, locked the door and committed an unplanned and unconscious act of murder. From Miami, the Crime Committee will leave for hearings in Chicago, San Francisco and other cities durlnf the fall. New York City hearings were held in June,

prisons, Its corpoate and governmental structures - -or Its schools. Those are the characteristics of a dying system. What this all means in that we black people must define our own Issues and questions. Our struggle Is not for segregation or Intergratlon, not for busing or antl-buslng. Our struggle Is for control over the total education of o u r children. We cannot leave that task in the hands of a corrupt and corrupting white America. We seek for control so that we may create new possibilities for out children, so that we may instill in them a love of themselves, a hatred of Injustice and exploitation, a determination to learn and to master knowledge of behalf or our people. We struggle for control so that we may help build in our children a commitment to the building of a new society, and not to “making It” In this one. For such black-defined eduatlon to be born, the American school system, as we know it, must die. These are our Issues. This is our task. To seize control, to build a new way. The only real question for us is how small we organize to do what we must do. Let the dead bury the dead, we must build a new society.

Right now, Blacks are not equipped to survive as a separate, independent nation. Of course, the national Black community has an annual gross spendable income of more than 30 billion dollars. But most of this economic wealth is gained from the payrolls of white business and industry. Like it or not, the Black community does not have enough Black-owned businesses to employ all our people at a salary level commensurate with today’s cost of living or the quality of our preparation. While economic independence may be many years away, there is one area whe’re Blacks can gain a greater voice today. That is in the political arena. We must adopt Education, Economics, and Politics as our power base. When I say political power, I’m not merely talking about electing a handful of Black candidate! to various officei. No, I’m talking about the importance of voter registration and placing your vote where it can reap the greatest return! for the Black community as a whole. It matters not whether a political candidate is Black or white, as long as he has empathy with the Black community and its problems. Wc must stop using our ballots to put people into office who are only concerned with lining their own pockets with gold. We must learn to listen and evaluate the promises of those who are seeking our support. We have arrived at a time when wc must stand up and let the world know that politicians can no longer count on our vote just because they promise us a bushel basket of food and fifteen dollars. Your vote is your power. Use it wisely, or we shall always be fighting the poverty, hunger, and blight that prevails in our community today.
