Spring Buchanan, Attucks grad, honored by the DAR

Tuesday, May 28, at the Crispus Attucks High School Senior Honor Day, exercises Mrs. Max Barney representive of Dauthters of American Revolution Irvington Chapter, presented Miss Spring A. Buchanana certificate of award and a pin for dependability, service, leadership and patriotism. Miss Buchanan is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert J. Buchanan, 536 W. 26th St. Spring won her first honor at the age of 14 months winning first place in a baby contest, during her four years at Attucks, she has received a ! number of awards, including first place in a Latin language contest. She was admited to the National Honor Society and won certificates of award for c iti-zenship, leadership, science, math, history and a foreign language. Spring affiliated with the church at the age of seven, is a devout Christian and a member of 25th Street Baptist Church, which is pastord by the Rev. E. J. Odum. Now 18^ years of age, her mother said, Spring has had 11 years of experiences teaching her, that without asking God's help and guidance she could accomplishment nothing. Miss. Buchanan said, she feels she owes her first thanks to God, and wishes to pay tribute to her pastor, parents, teachers and others who have helped and encouraged her.

JOYCE M. JOHNSON Joyce M. Johnson was graduated Tuesday, June 9 from Indiana University-Purdue University at Indianapolis at exercises held at the State F air Grounds. Mrs. Johnson is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Herbert Smith of 3470 N. Kenwood. Mrs. Johnson earned aBachelor of Science degree in education and has started on her master's degree on the campus at Indiana University in Bloomington. An aunt, Mrs. Lee Stanberry is credited by Mrs. Johnson as the person who encourage her to finish her education. Mrs. Stansberry lives at 3925 N. Kenwood. Mayor Richard G. Lugar and Joseph L. Sutton, president of Indiana University spoke at the commencement exercises.

Chatting F.A.C. ELSA IACKS0N Color movies shown by S.W. James drew a large crowd at the regular meeting. Several other members who observe June birthdavs were feted in observance of their birthdays. A birthday cake was served by Mrs. S. W. James, with "Happy Birthday" sung by the groupA number of the persons who travelled to the Orient last year were in attendence last Simday, when movies of the Oriental tour were shown. Plans for the 1970 are completed. Several more persons can be accommidate on the tour. Mrs. Mary H. Martin, chairman of the Activites committee. Will entertain the members of her committee at her home Monday, June 15th. Mrs. Martin said, this athank you for a job well done. Many members of F AC. attended the banquet sponsored by the National Council of Negro Women. Mrs. Willa Mae Roundtree the first life member of the F A C.became a life member of the Council. Mrs. Mildred Kirk will host the Golden Circle Girls next week. Our sympathy to Mrs. Anna Parnell. Her son was buried this week. The Purple Heart Nurses, met May 16 at the home of Mrs. Laura Wilson, 2725 Riverside Dr., where the members of the club transacted some important business during a dinner meeting. The Nurses will meet Saturday, June 13, in the home of Mrs. Lorene Monroe, 2920 E. 34th. *** The Girl Scouts of Troop 236 along with their parents were feted with a pitch in dinner in the Shelter Area of George Washington Park. The residence of Mr. and Mrs. Jimmie D. Eldridge, 2804 Brouse St., was the scene May 17 of the beautiful 35th anniversary reception of Mr. and Mrs. Radford West. Many guest were present at the gala affair. Hostesses were Mrs. Georgia Walker, Mrs. Essie Jones, Mrs . Hope Phillips, Mrs. Pearl Suggs, Mrs. Gertrude Randell, Mrs. Daisy Lewis. Charles Brown, son of Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Brown, 2434 Indianapolis Ave., following a visit with his parents has returned to the campus of Indiana State University, Terre Haute. He will serve as a counselor for the Upward Bound summer program. He is a ‘68 graduate of Attucks High School and in his senior year was president of the Students' Council. This is his second year at Indiana State. H e is president of the English Club and a member of Alpha Phi Alph Fraternity.

Ushers who escorted the guest were Henry Walker Jr., Michael Ford, William M. Lewis and Artie Randell with Mrs. Mildred serving as commentator. The table was set with a beautiful four tier wedding cake, and a beautiful punch bowl. Guest were served a lovely dinner. Mr. and Mrs. West were recipients of a purse and many beautiful gifts.

The city Federation will meet Tuesday 16th at 2034 N. Capitol Ave. The Silver Threads will host the meeting and have planned the program. Election of officers is schduled and members are urged to bring in all reports. Preparation are to be made for the annual convention to be held in Gary July 11 thru 14th.
