Jo Jo learns Pacers host Spencer

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8 veraging 17.4 for the Jayhawks, the Big Eight Conference leaders. During his two and one-half years of collegiate eligibility^ he was a standout on three United States teams, none of which lost a game. In 1967 he was the top scorer for the team that won the Pan-Ameri-can Games title in Winnipeg, Canada. He tallied 125 points in nine games. Later that year, he paced the United States to victory in the University Games in Tokyo and last October was second to Spencer Haywood of Detroit in scoring as the United States won its seventh straight Olympic basketball gold medal in Mexico City. He scored 105 points in nine games. In addition to being named to several all-American teams, White was one of the 15 candidates nominated for the Amateur Athletic Union's Sullivan Award. White is the representative for basketball in the honor annually bestowed to the amateur athlete who by performance, example and good influence did the most to advance the cause of good sportsmanship. Coaches often have described Jo Jo as one who was born* with a basketball in his hand. They are not too far wrong White grew up in a St.Louis neighborhood where basketball was a way of life* He started playing organized basketball in the fourth grade. An average day for White at this time consisted of a basketball occasionally interrupted by classes. **We played during gym class, during recess and at lunch," White said. ‘‘Then we'd go to Buder Recreation Center, about eight blocks away and play some more from 5:30 to 9:30." But despite all his proficiency in basketball, White would have wound up in a football uniform if not for his worrying mother. “I considered football my main sport when I started high school," said White. ‘‘All my friends were playing it and

free throw line.

His 14 goals, combined with three straight he made in a contest against Miami last Wednesday night, totaled 17 to establish a new American Basketball Association record, breaking the old mark of 16 held by Ban Warley of the Anaheim Amigos (now the Los Angeles Stars) last season. Mel Daniels, the Pacers' big center, tallied 22 points. Freddie Lewis had 19, Steve Chubin 18, Bob Netolicky 13, Larry Hooper 11, Jay Miller 10, Don Dee 4, John Fairchild 3, and George Peeples 2. Larry Jones led the Rockets

with 30 points.

Coach Bob Leonard's crew now has won three home games by scoring 141,140 and 131 points. The Pacers shot better than 50 percent from the field on 52 of 103 attempts. Against Miami Wednesday night, the Hoosiers led all the way by counts of 28-23, 73-47 and 111-83 before the final

gun.

Daniels and Miller shared scoring honors for the Pacers and the contest with24 points each. Brown and Lewis had 19, Netolicky 17, Chubin 15, Fairchild and Dee each 8,and Hooper and Peeples 3 each. Brown hit on 16 of 24 fielders and four of six free tosses as he led the Pacers in scoring against Kentucky Monday night, before 5,952 fans here in a 141-129 victory. Daniels had 26 points, Chubin 15, Lewis, Netolicky and Miller each 14, Peeopes 11, Hooper 8 and Fairchild 3. I went out for the team for a half year. But my mother found out about it and forced me to quit. She said there weren't as many injuries in basketball." Now, as Jo Jo completes his eligibility at Kansas, he’s waiting for the money offers to pour in from professional basketball.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 8 surroundings. John Wooden, the UCLA coach, limits and screens each Alcindor interview. When Haywood enrolled at Detroit this fall, his coach, Bob Caliban, asked him whether he wanted to grant press interviews. Haywood emphatically answered yes. "Every time I hold an interview," Haywood said recently, "it helps me to improve my vocabulary, to learn new words and to learn about people. When I was first selected to the Olympic team and people started interviewing me, I was so nervous all I could say was ‘vps* and ‘no’." Alcindor’s cuuise of study ir oriented to social work. Haywood selected radio-television studies because he would like to become a Hollywood stuntman and wanted to improve his communicative senses. "People expected me to take physical education as a major," Haywood said. "But I didn't want to become a coach. That’s not my bag." Haywood is fashion-con-scious. He designs his own wardrobe-"clothes," he says, "that will flatter the big man. If I’m big, it shouldn’t be any handicap in anything I want to do." Yet what Haywood and Alcindor represent as individuals is more important than the indifference that have marked their careers. In this respect, they share similar views. "I want people to respect Spencer Haywood as a black man not just as Spencer Haywood, basketball player," Haywood said. "And I’m not an enthused about college ball as I thought I would be. It’s not me against another person; it’s me against three of four guys." It is for this reason that Haywood relishes the thought of a meeting with Alcindor, if not in college, then as a professional or even on some lonely playground in Detroit, Chicago, Philadelphia or NewYork, where pride means surviving a game of one-on-one. "I know if I played against Lew I’d play better because I’d feel I’d have something to prove," Haywood said. "I have to prove that I’m as capable a player as he is, that I’m as good, that I can cut it. That’s my style."

WALKER PIX-The ghost of notorious pirate Edward Teach (Peter Ustinov) duels with an imaginary opponent in this amusing scene from "Black - beard's Ghost," Walt Disney's newest comedyfantasy about a trach coach with an invisible ally. The pix, starring Ustinov, Dean Jones, and Suzanne Pleshette, opens Saturday at the Walker. Harry Markson, the Garden boxing director, and Brenner would prefer Foster to oppose the winner of the Feb. 3 heavyweight bout between Buster Mathis and George Chuvalo. "But that’s a farce," said Salow. "What are they? But if the heavyweight matches don’t work out, I’d like to get Benvenuti to step up from the middleweight title and challenge Bob for his title. That’d be a pip of a match.’’ Foster would prefer to remain in the 175-pound division. He likes to say that he's a light-heavyweight.
