Sees need of minorities to supply more employees

NEW YORK - Two million employees in the retail business will be needed in the next five years, according to leading personnel director, who suggested that efforts be made to recruit these employees from Negro, Puerto Rican and other minorities. William T. Lord, of the F.W. Woolworth Company, told a meeting of retailers at the Institute of Retail Management at New York University, that it is most essential to develop a -program of communication especially for retailers studying growth patterns to meet future needs of the industry. “Merely being an equal opportunity employer does not and will not suffice," Mr. Lord said. “We must assume real leadership in this direction and by our own aggressiveness, help to solve our own problems as well as the growing problems of the urban crisis." The success stories of the disadvantaged, when given the opportunity, he added, are “just short of phenomenal." Mr. Lord said that the majority of the jobs that will become available in retailing during the next five years are not menial jobs. “Most requirements will be in the dynamic areas of sales,

leadershi, supervision and management trainees. “In the New York metropolitan area," he said, “38 per cent of those now participating in the company’s executive management training program are from minority groups. Most of them are Negroes. EUGENE SMITH Funeral services for Eugene Smith, age 72, 255 Blue Ridge Rd. were held in Phillips Temple CME Church Wednesday, Nov. 27. The burial was in Crown Hill Cemetery. cher at School 69. Reports from the doctors say this transplant is the most successful of those performed. This proves that there is nothing impossible with God. “God is still on the throne" for those who have faith and trust Him. *** I cannot find words to express to the many sponsors of various programs who have added me to their program participants. However, I am grateful that Miss WillaThomas, our church columnist, is able to cover many programs, and she is to be congratulated for the fine work she is doing. Few could cover the field she now covers. Too much praise cannot be given this very fine young woman. Let us pray she will continue to work for the Master. *** May I remind all church people that they should register with their church home at least once a year - better still be present each and every week, Sunday or weekdays. It’s hard for a pastor to speak over your last remains when he hardly knows you. So. in 1969 register with your church home. Remember you can’t vote unless you have registered - respect the church as well. *** The New Bethel baptist Church usher board had its annual dinner in fellowship hall Saturday, Dec. 7. The committee included Arnold Gee, Anna Hamel, LucindaTowns, Verdell Garnett, Ammy L. McReynolds, Mary Robinson, Preston Brown, Raymond Pipkins and William Christian. 7 We regret that Lewis T. Spann has been shut-in and may not be able to attend. However, we do look forward to Dr. and Mrs. F. Benjamin Davis, pastor and wife, being present. Usher work is very important. I had a great deal to do with planning pews for various occasions and arrangements according to the pastor’s service. *** The clerk of New Bethel Baptist Church, Mrs. Frances E. Boglin, lists “Ten Ways to Kill An Organization." They are (1) Don’t go to meetings; (2) If you go, trail in late; (3) If it’s bad weather, don’t even think of going; (4) Whenever you do attend meetings, find fault with the officers; (5) Never accept an office. It is much wiser to sit back and criticize; (6) If you are appointed to a committee, don’t go to its meetings; if you are not appointed, get peeved about it; (7) When your opinion is asked, reply that you have nothing to say; but after the meeting tell everyone what activities should be included in the program and just how things should be done; (8) Do nothing more than is absolutely necessary; when others do the lion’s share, tell everyone the organization is run by a clique; (9) Don’t worry about paying your dues; wait until you receive two or three notices; (10) Don’t bother about getting new members; let the ones who do all the work do that too.

ROOSEVELT CITY, Ala. - (NPI) - Incorporation of Negro communities is becoming the “in" way to build black power in the South. Roosevelt City, a community of 5,000 people near Birmingham, provides an example of the gains that can result from incorporation. Black people in other areas of the South are following suit. The community used to be just a run-down neighborhood. Now, some 10 months after its incorporation, it has its own officials and police force. Even more importantly, Roosevelt City has source of money that were not available before its incorporation. It now collects tax revenues, and federal funds should be forthcoming soon. “There are millions available for cities that you can’t touch without being incorporated," said Orzell Billingsley, a black attorney in Birmingham who was a leader in the move to incorporate Roosevelt City. Billingsley serves as town

judge.

secretary; Mrs. Fannie Allen, corresponding secretary; Mrs. Bert Buckner, Alphonse Turner, Mrs. Marcia Scott, and Clarence Taylor. Members not present were Rev. efonomic situation, the municipality’s residents now have the security of knowing that the town is patrolled by its own police force. Before, police protection was absent when it was most needed. For the community’s black residents, the town is a haven from a white world that has largely rejected them. It is a town where they have a chance to become community officials, rather than having to step back because they’re hlacjc. And Roosevelt City offers an escape from police brutality, Jim Crow, and second-class citizenship. Being the bosses of their own community, black residents have an opportunity to live in an atmosphere of selfrespect and self-sufficiency. In the most vivid and real way, they are building black economic and political power. Roosevelt City’s incorporation appears to have prompted several other black communities to follow the town’s example.

Ridgedale (Ala.), a Negro town, is being formed and incorporation is pending at Gees Bend, Ala. Other black communities planning to incorporate are Mason City, near Birmingham; Harlem Heights, near Hueytown, Ala.; Bellamy, i n southern Alabama; and Juanita, Ala. MRS. SUSIE DEXTER Funeral services for Mrs. Susie Dexter, age 82, 2040 Mayfair Drive, were held Tuesday, Dec. 3, in the Peoples Funeral Home. The burial was in Floral Park Cemetery. She died in General Hospital Friday, Nov. 29 She was a native of Georgetown, Ky. and had lived here since 1910. She was a member of the Missionary Baptist Church and a retired employee of the Cold Springs Road VA Hospital. Survivors include a nephew, Grant Washington, city and a niece, Mrs. Gladys Washington, Georgetown, Ky. BOTH WAYS. Want Ads pay.
