Churchill made the fact known last week, and, although not revealing names, said the two gmen combined for a total 24 ^rears experience in law enforcement. Inspector Langford said the two additional men bring the total to six men working on nar-

cotics investigations, and two others are expected to join the squad soon. Churchill stated that the appointments were “selective” and that the newmen were chosen because of their “vast knowledge of crime and crime trends.” He also said that the. department will eventually have two narcotic squads, instead of one. Inspector Langford said the entire department is suffering from a manpower shortage, but the narcotics branch needs building because of the increase problem of drug abuse. The men will have to undergo advanced training in narcotics and drug use.

A plan for a study or survey of the current urban criis involving the Jewish community’s relationship to the inner city has' been initiated recently by the Indianapolis Jewish Welfare Federation. The president, Liebert Mossier and executive director, Frank Newman have noted that a committee will be named to consider experimental inno - vations likely similar to demonstration projects adopted by Jewish agencies in several metropolitn areas over the nation. Such demonstrations or projects have been aimed at combatting the problems in employment, housing, education and health confronted in black ghettoes. Speakers on a panel conducted during the recent meeting included: Alan Goldstein, a college student; Sigmund Beck, local attorney; Norman Newman, attorney; Mrs. Sandra Borns and Phil Pecar, president ofthe local Jewish Community Relations Council. Mr. Goldstein ventured that Jewish merchants should leave the inner city before i”s “too late.” Mr. Beck suggested that they consider remaining and taking in Negro partners in business. Further he suggested that Negro businessmen should be encouraged to operate in the suburbs as well as in the inner city. He cited examples in some riottorn cities of Negro people helping the burned-out Jewish businessman to rebuild as evidence of the spirit of goodwill on the part of many Negro people. Mr. Newman, attorney, found “offensive” the suggestion that the Jewish community make a concerted effort to replace inner city Jewish mercants with Negro business operators. Again, Mr. Goldstein proposed that the Jewish merchant can involve him self persojinally by using his experience to teach Negro people how to run small businesses. Mrs. Borns expressed doubt on much overt racism, butvenNorman Marsh dies after long illness Funeral services for Norman Marsh were held July 5 in Jacobs Brothers Westside Chapel, with burial in Floral Park Cemetery. He died July 1 at Veterans Hospital after a long illness.

NORMAN MARSH Mr. Marsh, a native of Chicago, had resided in this city for a number of years and was a member of Pilgrim Chapel. The World War n veteran was employed at Democratic State Headquarters. ^ Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Nazorene Marsh; two children, his foster parents, Mr. and Mrs. Louis Williams and two sisters, Mrs. Carlena James of Indianapolis, and Mrs. Ester Simpson of Chicago. Dog Scared Braves • (CFN)—One of the first dogs to reach the Americas was a greyhound brought to Mexico by a Spanish Conquistadore, reports the Purina Pet Care Center. Seeing the dog for the first time, the Mexican Indians regarded it as a kind of lion or tiger developed to kill Indians.

tured that except for young people, most Jews are “completely and dangerously apathetic." Mr. Beck explained that some Jews become racist as they are assimilated into the culture of the non-Jewish white majority. He ventured that such Jews oppose open housing and integrated schools. Rabbi Saltzman spoke of the Bibical foundations for Jewish inv o 1 v e m e n t in the urban crisis and he warned that if the Jewish community isolates itself from the problems ofthe non-Jewish world, it violates its covenant with God.

Summer jamboree to be enjoyed by youngsters

One Sunday School class at Second Christian Church under the excellent leadership of Mrs. Howard Enix, has planned a summer jamboree for youths ages 10 through 16. Each Tuesday some recreational program is well planned and supervised by the adults of the class. A kick-off Tuesday, July 3, packed the parking lot where siblings listened to their favorite music and were served refreshments. Mrs. Calvin Day, chairman of the project, is being aided by other members of the adult class: James T. Fowler, John

Ray, Mr. and Mrs. Boyd Burnett, Mrs. Charles Smith, Mrs. Charles Speed, Mrs. Howard Hollifield, Mrs. Owen Burford, Wilbur Jackson, and Debra PaWilbur Jackson, and Debra Padgette, a youth representative. Members of the Urban Task Force of Norwood Christian Church have given aid to the planning of the program as well as Rev. Larry Oldham, of University Methodist Church. Youngsters are now looking forward to visiting John Herron Art Museum, Holiday Park, and obtaining free tickets to Starlight Musicals.
