Memphis boycott threat shakes power structure
MEMPHIS, Tenn.—Downtown merchants are reeling under the threat of a Negro boycott during the second busiest season
of the year, Easter.
Rallying behind the striking
all-Negro Local 1733 of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employes, Negro ^ministers yesterday urged church members to “keep your money in your pockets, no
new clothes for Easter.” Since the garbage collectors’
strike began two weeks ago, the city’s 200,000 Negro population has shown unprecedented unity and white merchants and civic leaders are not only shocked by the threat of a boycott but serious racial trouble erputing for the first time in the city of a

structure is working frantically at various meetings to end the dissession. Spurred by virtually all of the city’s Negro ministers, pickets greeted downtown shoppers Tuesday morning. At the heart of the tense situation is the striking sanitationmen’s demand for recognition of their union, which is affiliated with the AFL-CIO. While the strike by the 1,375 sanitation department workers has inconvenience residents, both black and white, the city is not suffocating under gar-
bage.
Memphis is small enough so that most people can find means to dispose of their trash. Moreover, the city has hired about 130 non-union workers to make spot pickups of refused at announced times. However, the threat of a preEaster buying strike by a large segment of the population has shaken the power structure.
