marriage, which until 1948 would have been an offense under California law, “did not unleash the kind of storm that it would have stirred only a few

years ago.

“Until last June, when the U.S. Supreme Court killed Virginia’s miscegenation law, 16 states still banned interracial marriage,” writes Time. “More to the point, and more poignant, in a year when blackwhite antimosity has reached a violent crescendo in the land, two young people and their parents showed that separateness is far from the sum total of race relations in the U.S. — that to the marriage of true minds, color should be no impediment.” Although the father of the bride has insisted, “this is a family matter,” the wedding was social history rather than “Dean Rusk, Secretary of State of the U.S., native of Cherokee County, Ga., and grandson of two Confederate soldiers, had given his only daughter’s hand to a Negro __The wedding bells

Effective use of black political power is urged WASHINGTON, D. C., — No evidence of a national conspiracy behind outbreaks of riots has been found by Senate investigators who have been working behind the scenes on the cause of the extensive acts of violence which rocked the nation this summer. The preliminary findings is in keeping with the earlier report of FBI Director J. Edgar Hoover to President Johnson’s Commission on Civil Disorders. The Senate’s report did indicate a feeling that there is “a loose linkage artiong militant Negro leaders.” Spokesmen for the Senate said there will be. perhaps months of investigation ahead before any report will be ready on the inquiry. In Aug. 1. Mr. Hoover told the President’s Anti-Riot Commission that based on his knowledge of 52 riots in the past three years, he found no indications of a conspiracy. He did add that there were signs outside agitators were involved in some of these upheavals. The Senate assigned a permanent subcommittee on investigations to study racial riots in U.S. cities. Investigators have compiled a list of 137 cities hit by racial outbreaks. The investigation will cover 60 to 75 of them. rang also for Dean Rusk.” In Washington, however, though a few Democrats muttered privately about political damage next year and the feeling of shock was obvious, appiehension was scattered and not taken very seriously, on the floors of the House and Senate “silence was the rule.” T&i magazine notes that there h^i been a “far greater outcry over Justice William Douglas’ suc-

Baptist dissidents blast 'one-man 1 Jackson rule

SUGAR POPS

DENVER — (NPI) — A group of dissidents within the National Baptist Convention, U. S. A., Inc., have lashed out at the organization’s “one-man” rule by its president, since 1954, Dr. J. H. Jackson of Chicago. “The same convention which endorsed and promotes voting rights in Mississippi is not allowed voting rights in its own meeting,” said the Rev. L. K. Curry of Ogden. Utah. Views in opposition to those of Dr. Jackson were given no chance to be heard, it was charged. “This is not consistent with moral ethics and Christianity.” he said. Joining in criticism of Dr. Jackson’s presidency was the Rev. Timothy Mitchell, New York. ( The dissidents, claiming to speak for thousands of delegates at the organization’s recent convention in Denver, said they did not want the nation

He denounced black power advocates and expressed his support of President Johnson’s Vietnam policies. Rev. Mitchell charged that the convention “has a civil rights commission, but it has never functioned. “There is no social action or social concern commission in operation—and this is the largest Negro denomination.” The dissenting ministers said Dr. Jackson had led the convention against people who had fought for the Negro’s rights “The tactics of some of these militant leaders may not be completely acceptable by Christian s t a n d a rds,” said Rev. Mitchell. “But what else can they do? The so-called responsible leadership does nothing.”
