Meredith clashes with 2 deacons; march ends

CANTON, Miss, — Before ending his 11-day 165-mile “march against fear” Through Mississippi Independence Day, James H. Meredith had a bitter exchange with Negro deacons who attempted to bar him from speaking in a Negro church. Suffering sore feet, but otherwise in good condition, Mr. Meredith spoke here July 4 at at the courthouse square, still maintaining that Negroes in Mississippi are afraid to support him for fear of white retaliation. As a result of his encounter with the Negro deacons, Mr. Meredith angrily declared: “Some Negroes ‘need* to be Ijmched” as he completed the march which was interrupted last year when he was wounded by a white sniper. The first known Negro graduate of the University of Mississippi was reportedly visibly angered after he was asked to leave the church by two deacons after being invited to speak there. After Mr. Meredith and his 16 followers went outside one shouted: “You’re a white man,” to a deacon. The church official retorted: “I’m a Negro. I was born a Negro.” The marchers were finally told “go on in and tell us what you want to tell us” by Jimmy Hoover, deacons’ chairman. The 150 listeners heard Mr. Meredith declare: “I can understand why so many Negroes have been lynched. Some of them need it.” He continued: “I’m glad there are no more towns between here and Canton. It does too much to me to have to stand around and see my people scared.” Agreeing, Mr. Hoover noted: “We’ve got too many scared people here.” Mr. Meredith, who admitted

having failed to extinguish fear among Mississippi Negroes, pointed out: “If Negroes ever do overcome fear, the white man has only two choices, to kill them or let them be free.” There reportedly were no crowds on hand to welcome Mr. Meredith and his supporters as they limped the final mile in the “walk against fear.” This city of 9,700, was the scene of several racial clashes in past years. Mr. Meredith contended that he thinks he has exposed fear, but has not gone very far toward extinguishing it. “The time it takes to rid the Negro of fear will depend on the actions and attitudes of whites. I have made the fear clear to Negroes,” he declared. The hike started June 24 near Hernando, Miss., and although it was originally planned to end it in Jackson, Miss., blistered feet and aching leg muscles made Mr. Meredith decide Canton was far enough since he rejoined last year’s march there after recuperating from birdshot wounds suffered near Hernando.
