Committee Chairman Edwin E. Willis (D.-La.) told the House that the issue “is quite simple and sharp.** His committee, a duly constituted committee of the House exercised its euthority under House rules and decided to investi*ate the klan. Hie House then “by overwhelming vote gave the committee additional funds to mako the investigation. Shelton, Willie seid, appeared before the committee in response to a subpena. Ho vsfused to produce certain documents sought in the subpena, claiming protection under the 6th, 4th and 14th amendments to the Constitution, Willis said. Not once did Shelton tell the committee that **1 don’t have those documents, or 1 never bed those documents, or you might try someone else," Willie said. The committee then took the position that under the rules of the House, the law of this country, and the decisions of the courts, he said that Shelton committed a contempt of the
House.”
Some members of the House, Willis said, questioned whether Shelton did not have the protection of the 6th amendment when he refused to produce the records. The klan is a corporation, Willis said. A corporation cannot claim protection against self-incrimination, Willis said. Neither can an officer of a cor-

NX. biologist wins acclaim
By George E. Hardin DURHAM, N. C. (NPI) — Muscular dystrophy is the subject of a 13-year-old project which is being pursued by Dr. Mary McLean Townes, associate professor of biology at North Carolina college. She is making a determined effort to provide increased knowledge about one of man’s most puzzling diseases. Her work involves the study of voticella, "decidely microscopic” animals which can contract and relax muscles until affected by the disease which causes them to progressively waste
away.
A parttime activity, sandwiched in between teaching and family responsibilities, the research work is being aided by grants from the Muscular Dystrophy Associations of America, Inc., and NCC Faculty Research committee. One of the high points of her research has been the publication of a paper, “The Involvnment of pH, Adenosine Triphosphate, Calcium and Magnesium in the Contraction of the Glycerinated Stalks of Vorticella.” The paper, requested by 122 professors and physiologists at universities and research facilities in the United States, Europe and Asia, was published in the Journal of Cellular and Comparative Physiology last April. Wife of Dr. Ross E. Townes, professor of physical education at NCC and mother of two daughters, she serves as secretary of the Durham Regional committee on the selection of missionary personnel in the Methodist church. In addition, she lectures before groups like the Department of Physiology and Pharmacology at Duke Medical center. A native of Southern Pines, N. C., Dr. Townes is a NCC graduate with a master’s in public health, and also holds a master’s and a doctorate from too University of Michigan.
