Chester A. Goens Rites were held Oct. 12 at Methodist Church, Longtown, O., for Chester A. Goens, 71, 1160 W. 30th with burial in Clemmons Cemetery there. He died Oct. 8 at Veterans Hospital. Mr. Goens, a native of Longtown, had resided here 20 years and was a retired employee of American States Insurance Co. He was a member of Men’s Union Bible Class and a veteran of World War I. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Emma Goens. a son Allen Goens, Chicago; a daughter, Miss Frances Goens, Gary; a brother, Lawrence Goens. Greenville, O.; four sisters, Mrs. Treca Milton and Mrs. Loma Faxton, both of Richmond, Ind., and Mrs. Augusta Hope and Miss Dora Goens, both of Greenville, O., and seven grandchildren. Calhoun Alexander, newspaper employe, services Friday Clahoun Alexander, 59-year-old moulder for The Indianapolis Times newspaper, died Monday at General Hospital. Rites were to be held Friday, 1 p.m., at Willis Mortuary, with burial in Floral Park Cemetery. Mr. Alexander had a record of long-time activity in local Democratic politics and held a strong opinion on most controversial subjects. He worked formerly as a Pullman porter and was recognized as a very vigorous person. Hi c death was preceded by a week’s illness brought on by a stroke. He resided at 548 N. Senate, Apt. 37. Born in Madison County, Florida, Mr. Alexander had lived here 37 years and worked PVfe years for The Times. Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Frankie Alexander, four sisters, Mrs. Savannah Henry, Live Oak, Fla., Mrs. Anna Bell Thompson, Jersey City, N.J., Mrs. Eva Stone, Jersey City, and Mrs. Carrie Ford, Tampa, Fla. and a brother, William Alexander, Warren, O.
Bishop hits refusal of suburban church to accept Negroes The Right Rev. Richard C. Raines, bishop of the Indiana Area of the Methodist Church, speaking to 500 women from several states together at North Methodist Church for the first session of a two-day 25th anniversary celebration of the Weslyn Service Guild, warned the group that the suburban church is very severely tempted to become a “private club.” Bishop Raines criticized persons who tend to thing of the church as “theirs.” He also continued by saying too many laymen think of the church as a place they built where their children get religious instruction, baptised and married, where they can be buried in later years and nothing more. “The church is God’s not ours, to fulfill his purpose, not ours,” Bishop Raines declared. “It is the place not where we change God’s mind, but where God changes ours.” He said “the church is not a place for seclusion of anyone but a fellowship for all, the educated with the uneducated, white with black. “The mission of the church is our attitude towards inclusiveness in the church, towards civil rights, towards accepting a Negro family in our neigh-
borhood.”
