Local Nile Spots Continued from Paee 12 a later date. JAZZ AT USSR: The “soft policy” of the U.S.S.R. is having some interesting ramifications. Although the Soviet line has always condemned jazz and the American music, the shortwave radio station at Moscow has recently been programming continuous light music, generously sprinkled with jazz and rhythm and blues. As a result many listeners have been won over from the German stations and the American sponsored Armed Forces Network. The complaint is that the German stations feature too much in the way of lectures, speeches and old plays, and that the Moscow station is playing the newest tunes even before they reach the AFN. Also music which is banned on British and German stations because of copyright procedures is being played on the Moscow station. No one seems to understand the switch in Moscow policy, specially in view of the fact that the Russians recently called jazz “typical psychopathic bedlam from the decadent West. DID YOU KNOW that it is a certainty — that many whites, some believe it or not, are frightened out of their wits, will vote for GOLDWATER, merely hoping that this will keep the Negro “in his place”. Of course, even if he wins, the Civil Rights Act is now law and this coun-

try must learn to live with it. But, many of the moderate, well-meaning whites are hoping Goldwater’s election will stop the on-rushing Negro. The add-ed-appearance on the American scene of race riots and wild street demonstrations, surely does nothing to help our cause, and indubitably does much to harm the proud image the New Negro is purpoting to show the world. We’re at the threslihold of complete equality now —if we muff it because of street demonstrations and Negroinstigated race riots, we’ve only ourselves to blame. Remember, we are still a minority of the total population, and CAN’T WIN BY OURSELVES. FROM THE NOTEBOOK: . . . Had the pleasure to meet one of my old friends who dropped by our offices. Jimmy Hensley, ex-bandleader who was the rage of the Middlewest back in the £0s and 40s with one of the best bands in the land with headquarters in Cleveland, Ohio. It had been many a moon since we had seen him until we dug him recently. He is currently teaching Math on the staff at Public School No. 5 here. We also understand that in the very near future he plans to marry one of our local named entertainers . . . Name? . . . Can’t tell . . . However, will give out the information when it happens . . . Dig.! . . . FRED ARMOR, custodian at School No. 32, will soon take a sick leave for about six w'eeks . . . Twin sisters — Martha Ann, Georgia Ann. and Mary Bailey along with Hattie Walker were guests at the 2148 Club on last Saturday Nite where Yours truly, and the AllStars combo are currently wailing two nites a week, namely — Friday and Saturdays. The sisters also dug another sister, Francis who is one of the Hostesses at the Black Orchid Tavern during the evening . . . Later ! ! !

Segregationist Ga. judge wins re-election ATLANTA (NPI) — Judge Durwood T. Pye, who sentenced an 18-year-old white coed to 18 months in jail for participating in an Atlanta restaurant sit-in, was assured of another eight years in office last week. Pye, whose name is considered synonymous with segregation, was boosted to victory in the Superior Court Democratic primary runoff by white Atlantans—despite a Negro bloc vote. “The forces 01 reason and moderation have suffered a setback,” said Pye’s defeated opponent, attorney Paul Webb. “I didn’t expect that the racist campaign of Judge Pye’s supporters would have had as much effect,” he added. Judge Pye has been a singular and controversial figure on the Atlanta bench since his appointment nine years ago by former Gov. Marvin Griffin, who is backing Sen. Goldwater. Final tabulations gave Pye 45,684 votes to Webb’s 43,436. Approximately 33,000 Webb ballots came from Negroes. Negroes may help JBJ win in South ATLANTA (NPI)—The Negro vote in the South is expected to play a vital role in the 1964 Presidential election. Negro voters below the MasonDixon Line are growing rapidly in numbers—and could deliver some key Southern states to the Democratic columns in November. Statistically, the Negro vote in the South is about twice the size it was four years ago. Negro voters in the 11 Southern states now number more than two million, compared with just over one million in 1960. Few Negroes in the South are expected to vote Republican. The Negro voter population of Georgia is estimated at a bout 275,000, or 18 per cent of the total registered. This is the highest figure of any Southern state. Mississippi, with the lowest number of registered Negro voters, has about 31,000 out of a 550,000 total.
