After exposure, the lithographic plate is chemically treated so that the image area attracts ink while the balance of the plate in the non-image areas repel ink and attracts water. The plate is then mounted on a press cylinder where it can be rotated in contact with three other rollers. The first of these applies water to the plate which adheres only to the non-image areas. The second roller applies ink to the image areas on the plate. The ink will not adhere to the non-image areas which are now covered by water. Finally, the inked image is transferred to a rubber roller which in turn transfers it to the paper. It is this last step which causes the printing process to be termed offset lithography, because the impression
