Xmas Boycott Continued from Page 1
ingham.’ ” •Baldwin said that Americans “have no right to celebrate Christmas this vear.” CONGRESSMAN Adam Clayton Powell, in a sermon Sunday entitled “Santa Claus Versus Jesus Christ” not only supported the boycott, but attacked Santa as an invention of the white man to spur business at Christmas time. Santa Claus has nothing to do With Christmas, Powell, declared. He is a yuletide figure only in Anglo-Saxon countries, where he was invented as a “commercial ginimick,” he said. He asked the congregation not to buy Christmas presents this year. While a recent survey has indicted the willingness of 98 percent of the Negroes to join in a boycott of companies or products, there was still a question whether leaders could overcome lifelong custom that has a religious basis to pull off a successful Christmas boycott. The Center for Research in Marketing, Inc., of Peekskill, N.Y., using 200 data-gatherers interviewed 1,164 Negroes in various parts of the country on the basis of a questionnaire. The interviews and the questionnaire were developed from data gathered in preliminary interviewing, covering 4,180 households individually and 400 persons in groups. A major finding of the study was that 89 per cent of the 1.16A Negroes interviewed said they would definitely or probably take part in boycotts. Another was that about one-third of them already have engaged in ‘selective buying” to enforce in the marketplace the attitudes they hold on civil rights.

gestion In the narrow doorway. Longshore pointed out that the policy applied to all students regardless of ra^e, but because of the existing tension, the policy had been discontinued. Meanwhile, the Eastside school was slowly returning to normal after several fights between white and Negro youths erupted on the campus Friday resulting in 28 boys and girls being taken into custody , by city police. OF THE 28, Eight were Crispus Attucks High School pupils. All were released to, their parents. As the. result of Friday’s incidents, at least one pupil was treated at Methodist Hospital alter being struck in the back with a brick. He was a white boy. Another youth, a 14-year-old girl, was also hospitalized after s uttering a seizure during the excitment. When Recorder reporters visited the campus, they noted that several Negro students were eating in theTeft wing, which has beco/ne knowh .to Negro pupils as the “white ride” of the cafeteria. Longshore said earlier this week that possible, disciplinary action would he taken against those participating In Friday’s disturbances. He s^id the punishment would be oh the “individual bases.” George Ostheimer, superintendent of Indianapolis Public Schools, said that he would talk with Tech and Attucks school officials to determine if any of Friday’s incidents were serious enough to warrant his attention. In an effort to combat the problem, Longshore formed a committee of two seniors from each of the school’s five senior homerooms tp give recommendations on solving the problem. The 10-member COuunittee was made up of five Negro students and five white students. The committee reported to Longshore after school Tuesday. “The committee feels it is quite necesary to overcome the appearance of segregation in the lunch room,” Longshore stated. “And at the same time we must maintain the student’s freedom of choice to eat with and associate with whom they want.” THE ACTING PRINCIPAL said Thursday that the school plans to widen the opening between the two wings. He said he, Ostheimer and a representative from the Schools and Grounds Department had talked over the possibility and found it feasible. He also sent out a bulletin to all home rooms Thursday stressing a positive approach that freedom does exist to students. He said further talks between himself the

appointed comitteed, and Herman T. Henshaw, vice-principal, were planned. “Our new cafeteria is scheduled to be completed and ready for use in September of 1965,” Longshore said. “This should resolve the problem completely:.” “We can'i say things have been calm and peaceful the la$t few days because things have not gone back to normal. Each day I try to do something to check the existing problem.” He said he personally feels that there has been wondei’ful cooperation between the students and teachers, and that the tension has subsided.
