Continued ttoih Page I 1 arrest of 38 other Negroes. Farmer said that the policemen, mounted on horseback, were ordered by Police Chief Dennis Songy to viciously charge the group of Negroes and their horses allowed to kick and trample on children. He said that at least 15 Negroes were injured. Labeling it “tne worse demonstration of police brutality I have seen in five years,” the CORE executive said: ‘1 have never seen such police treatmen in Mississippi or Ala-
bama.”
He described now officers used hi: h-nowered fire hoses and tear guns on the marchers and irad tear gas into a church that was being used as Negro headquarters. Farmer immediately sent a telegram to Atty. General Robert Kennedy requesting him to send Federal marshals into Iberville Parish (county) to protect Negro rights against the “lawless activity of law enforcement officials” at Plaquemine. He described tne way police and state troopers handled demonstrators Saturday night as “an outrage to the sense of decency.” After the court action, Farmer posted $300 appeal bond and stated that he planned to appeal to the State District Court. He later left for New York. Seven other persons, convicted alono- with him. were fined from $100 to $400 and sentenced from 30 to 90 days in jail. A ninth defendant, Helen Louise Davis, the only woman on trial was acquitted. All were arrested in connection with Plaquemine’s “freedom march” held August 19 in which some 7,000 persons participated.
