OLIVE BRANCH, Miss. (ANP) —An unemployed practical nurse saved three white persons from bleeding to death following a highway accident last week, and as a result has a job. She is 30-year-old Mrs. Shirley Bledsoe who was driving along Highway 78 just north of here when she saw the tangled remains of two autos that had collided. A woman and two children were

stretched out on the pavement. People were running about excitedly, but nobody knew what to do. Forgetting race, Mrs. Bledsoe leaned over 11-year-old Gary Warner first. Blood flowed from | a two-inch gash on his face. She pressed her fingers on the arteries i of his temple and neck, slowing

badly-lacerated mother, Mrs. Betty Warner, 35, of Byhalia, Miss. Then she switched her attentions

to Pam Warner, 15.

She worked on them for an hour and when it was over the up-to-then out of work nurse slumped over, completely exhausted. Doctors at Methodist Hospital in Memphis, where the Warners are recovering, said they would have bled to death had it not been

razor, and Hankins pulled a .22 caliber revolver and shot

him.

Glover further stated that Gaines staggered about 25 feet to his (Glover’s) car, pulled open his shirt and fell to the sidewalk. Meanwhile Hankins left the scene and went to his sister’s nousc at 1558 N. College, where be left the gun. Reportedly still thinking Gaines was only slightly injured, Hankins returned to the scene shortly afterward “to see how the victim was doing,” and was identified by an onlooker as the man who had done the shooting. THE ACCUSED SLAYER explained that he and Gaines had been very good friends since high school, and that they were only playing with each other when the gun "accidentally” discharged. He told authorities he left a nearby pool room at about 5 p.m. and saw Gaines and Glover standing in a lot near 19th and College. vjaines, police were told, had iOiiiC change in his hand. Hankins noticed the money and asked Gaines for 50 cents, which he was

given.

While they were talking, Hankins told police, Gaines reached into his pocket and pulled out some paper money. Hankins again asked me some money, but this time Gaines jokingly refused. The two then reportedly started ‘ playing around,” and, suddenly, Gaines pulled a straight razor. Hankins said he didn’t think Gaines meant to attack him because “we played like that all the time.” Hankins said he pulled a nineshot .22 caliber revolver which he nad reportedly been carrying all day. investigators said Hankins loid them he had been attempting to shoot birds where he worked, out the gun wouldn’t lire and he was going to take it to a repair

shop.

However, Hankins said, the gun

Also commenting on the Goodman murder, James Forman, SNCC executive secrc- - tary, declgred: “This is an- i other instance of lawlessness I designed to protect the segregated power structure and to intimidate voter registration , workers and potential voters. “Unless the United States gov-

ernment demonstrates that it can protect the rights of American citizens, a trip to the moon will -n

Goodman, in Holmes County where the hacked body was found is about 45 miles south of Greenwood, Miss., where four SNCC field secretaries fled their office on Aug. 17 to avoid potential lynchings by j a menacing group of white men ‘

armed with chains -nd ropes. SNCC SAID the population of

The witness Glover told police he was sitting in his car when the shooting occurred; however, Hankins said he thought Glover was behind him. Police said they would investigate the conflict. Cunningham said Gaines was awaiting trial on a bad check charge, and Hankins had been arrested three times for loitering and had served a year on the State Farm for vehicle taking.
