EXHIBIT THRILLS, GAIETY OF 'SOO' FROLIC: Indianapolis socialites joined thousands of out-of-towners at Speedway May 30 for the exciting annual "500" Mile Race" which was won by 1959 champ Rodger Ward. Keeping in tab with the race and enjoying a day of relaxation, enjoyment and pleasure those "caught in the act" by our photographer included the happy group above. Arthur

Carter (left) and Lee Lunderman check the line-up preceding the signal to start the race, while charming Mrs. Ruth Clinthorne of 4249 N. Capitol relaxes in a lounging chair, dolled in fresh, cool sports clothes, as she listens to the proceedings over her petite transistor radio. Snacks were in order for Pete Olden of 143 W. Fall Creek Parkwav and Dr. Rudy Porter of Detroit who pre-

pare their platters before re-joining the crowd at the raceway. Mrs. Louise B. Grooves and Mrs. Maxine Smith, a couple of Maywood, III. cuties, arrayed in casual finery, pause to read the paper's coverage of the race, seated in the bleachers amongst other fans. Mrs. Eva Lawson, an employee of the Universal Film Corporation and Mrs. Olga Richardson, employee of The Saturday Evening Post, love-

lies from Philadelphia, sit atop a car with Mrs. Virginia Richardson of Indianapolis (right), an employee of the Indiana State Revenue Department. All chose up-to-date straw hats and refreshing summer attire for Memorial Day's warm, sunny weather which was perfect for the race lovers who converged on Indianapolis Speedway for the regal spectacular. 1 1105 N. New Jersey, i ve been j taking The Recorder for years and I want an article put in the | paper about my father. He’s celebrating his 103rd birthday Sunday and we’re having an Open House for him Saturday.’’ Thus a Recorder subscriber for many, many years phones us the news and we oblige by printing a story about Miss Beatrice Mae Smith’s father, George B. Smith. The spry centenarian, who enjoys gardening and attending Mt. Paran Baptist Church where he is a charter member, will be special guest at th« reception from 12 noon till 6 p.m. He is described as being “very active with a good sense of humor and a lot of initiative.’ He has a vegetable garden which he still tends on occasions and has been in charge of a Prayer Band each Saturday for 25 years at the Alpha Home. He also travels with a Prayer Band of Mt. Paran from door to door each Tuesday. His daughter said he is like a “daddy” to Dr. C. Henry Bell, pastor of Mt. Paran. On the mysterious side, Smith related that her father has a personal possession which he keeps locked up in an old trunk No one has ever seen its contents but Miss Smith says sometimes he says “one day I’ll open it.” The trunk was brought from the South when he came here 62 years
