Gas Purchase Gets - Sugar at Sinclair Station's Celebration During their anniversary celebration, Oct. 28, 29 and 80, Trout’s Sinclair Service Station, 217 W. 36th, is giving five pounds of sugar and free lollopops for thekiddies with the purchase or eight or more gallons of gas. Reporf On African Study to Be Made Sunday at Mt. Zion For the last few months, the Education Committee of ML. Zion Baptist Church has been studying Africa and its people. freedom. Supported by the numbers of their congregations, the ministers had little difficulty winning election to the leadership. Rev. Ford Gibson in a whirlwind campaign ousted P. Hobson Zeigler, business man and former Senate Avenue YMCA worker, as Indianapolis president for 1958. Last year Rev. Gibson moved up to state president and Rev. Burton won the local presidency, defeating Andrew W. Ramsey 161-101. BUT AS THE “ministerial alliance" mowed down its opposition, many of the loyal and energetic leaders of the organization's work were forced to the sidelines. It was significant that the only ’ non-clergyman speaking on behalf of Rev. Burton’s candidacy last year was Atty. Henry J. Richardson Jr. Atty. Richardson had won acclaim for his brilliant leadership of the outstanding Life Membership Campaign, but he has not been active in the regular work of the local branch in recent years. Old reliables who had been plugging year in and year out in such fields as civil rights, legal redress, membership and fund-raising, felt themselves rebuked and scorned. And it soon became clear that there was a wide difference between “church methods” of operation and those to which the NAACP workers were accustomed. The ministers emphasized personal leadership, while the old NAACP’ers were used to parliamentary procedure and vigorous debate be-

THERE IS NO DOUBT the ministers have larger mass followings. But the NAACP lay leaders, at least in Indianapolis, have always identified themselves with the cause of the Negro masses. And ironically, they tried for years to “get the ministers to be-

come active."

So far this year, it has appeared that what works in a prayer meeting might not work m a bear meeting. Yet if Rev. burton’g pubHcspirited call for unity arouses a widespread response*, the two factions could join hands and the local NAACP would emerge stronger that it has ever been.
