A Salute To All Workers ... Labor Day

Locel Chapter of Negro American Labor Council Seeks New Members

Ed's Note: This article was written by Thomas Walker, president of the United Packinfhouse Food and Allied Workers of America, AFL-CIO. Local 117. In July, 1969, approximately 75 Negro trade union leaders met in New York to consider the formation of a national organization, which would be dedicated to the interest of Negro trade unions. In May of this year, the first convention of the Negro American Labor Council was held in the city of Detroit, Michigan, where a constitution was drafted, and officers elected, with A. Philip Randolph, president of the Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters, elected as its first president. In July this year, a group of trade union leaders in this city tnet for the purpose of forming a Chapter of the NALC, and on

August 14th the first Chapter was formed and officers elected. The Local Chapter is in the process of building its membership, to help fulfill the aims of the National body, in securing 100,000 members by the next convention in May, 1961. The requirements for membership are simple; an applicant must be a member of a trade union in the city. The purposes of the Negro American Labor Council are to eliminate discrimination in employment, tear down all racial bars in the trade unions, to further build a stronger and more militant democratic union movement in this country. Perhaps, you are interested in affiliating with the Local Chapter, if so, please call ME. 5-4648, and a representative will visit you to explain the aims of this Chapter in more detail.

A PLEA TO MOTORISTS: DRIVE CAREFULLY OVER THE HOLIDAYS SCHOOL'S OPEN . . . HELP KIDS STAY ALIVE! HOLD YOUR JOB! While organized effort is being exerted on many fronts in the constructive interests of the Negro citizen or worker, you can aid this program by demonstrating in every way possible that you are ready for the responsibilities attendant upon being a good citizen, or worker. ■■ ■ v Work everyday; your factory has a schedule of production to meet. Be on time always. EVERY WORK DAY including Sundays and Holidays. Don't loaf on the job. Keep your body clean and your person n eat—this is self respect, which only you can deny yourself. Dress sensibly and remember you can be clean even in rags. Politeness or courtesy and the spirit of cooperation mark one as the desirable worker. Don't carry a chip on your shoulder. Remember your employer and foreman have problems. Fate has opened new opportunities in U.S. industry for the Negro workers of the Nation. IT IS UP TO YOU TO HOLD THE LINE. Would you like a better job? Don't you want a better opportunity tor your children? Would you like a better work opportunity for your brother, son or father in the channels of modern industry? > * Negro workers of the Nation can go up, or they can go down and out. The individual worker has much to do with the course of things. IT ALL DEPENDS UPON YOU. CHOOSE THIS DAY—THE COURSE YOU WILL FOLLOW. Would you like a better home? Would you like a good bank account? Would you like security in your old age? Don't yoUjjyqnt to jbe a^part of a better community, and a better world?—Many of these possibilities must be associated with the INDIVIDUAL WORKER'S REGARD FOR HIS JOB, any job. The ability to hold your job or get a better job depends upon the general attitude of Negro workers in regard to their obligations to industrial management. HOLD YOUR JOB! SAVE YOUR MONEY! SUPPORT YOUR COMMUNITY!
