1 In R Ind. Cars Defective, Traffic Director Says One out of each eight motor vehicles in Indiana was found to have equipment defects during the annual state-wide Vehicle SafetyCheck, according to State Traffic Safety Director, L. C Rever. With more ihan half of the 2.170,000 registered cars and trucks being inspected in 315 Hoosier communities, a total of 138.215 faults was dLicovered. Lighting systems by far topped the list of defects. Lamps in 69,135 roan- and stop lights and turn signals were found to be burned out as well a:; in 29,929 headlights for a total of 99,064 safety hazards. This constituted 70 percent of aR defects. Other defects included 5,726 brakes, 6,144 windshield wipers, 5,197 tires and 12,880 exhaust systems. Also (becked were steering, window glass, rear view mirrors and horns. “With this large number of defect’s being disc’osed in the 1,101,683 cars voluntarily submitted for inspection,” Mr. Bever said, “imagine what the total would be in the millio whose drivers either shunned or neglected rhe free checks *’ All motorists with defective parts were instructed to have parts repaired and return for approval. “If more than half of our motorists have a sincere interest :n the safety of their vehicles on a voluntary basis, it seems to be a testimonial that Hoosiers are willing to follow the lead of 15 other states in, enacting an official state periodic inspection,” this state director said. — REGISTER TO VOTE— James E.
