IT'S THE SOFT TOUCH: While the talkers are still talking, the doers, Henry Dawson, left, president of the Hedephrone Club and Ramon Toliver Sr, president of the Douglass Dads' Club, demonstrate how easy it is to give a "new look" to this Dougiass Park building, one of the many public eyesores around the Dounla'ss Park area. These men represent two Eastside clubs who have joined hands with other Eastside civic groups and churches to try to better the menacing conditions which have been called
"deplorable." (Recorder photo by Jim Burres)

PHOTOGRAPHS — THEN WORK: No need to worry about thess men taking too much time out for photos. They have too much work to do. And work it is—cleaning up junk, beer can, ofhsr debris and tall weeds. Oh, yes they have to pa nt too. Eastsiders say that conditions in park, especially around the swimming pool, are next to the worst possible and worsening. Many of the Eastsiders, clubs and churches., have taken it upon themselves to see to it that these conditions are bettered, with or without the
help of the park administration and city government. Pictured above are members of two of the clubs (the Hedephrones and the Douglass Dads) who are putting in a little overtime. They ore (first row left to right) John L. Alexander, Sylvester Williams, Melvin Banks, Henry Dawson and Lemon Murrell. MISS. LAW SAYS NEGRO CAN ‘VERBALLY’ INSULT WHITE WOMAN FROM 40’ HOUSTON, Miss. (ANP)—Willie Joe Atkinson was arrested last week and charged with making an ‘‘indecent proposal” after a 40-year-old school teacher said the youth asked her for a “date” from a distance of 40 feet, and suggested “a little romance.” Police say they believed he intended to criminally assault the teacher, a spinster, so held Atkinson under a broad new segregation statue which makes “indecent proposals” a crime. The teacher in relating the incident to police said the youth entered her yard "but did not get closer than 40 feet” to her. o
