“They haven’t been able to get jobs cr credit or anything else since they registered to vote.” Tur-

ner said.

About 60 percent of the county’s population of 24,000 is Negro, but according to the U.S Civil Rights tommission, no Negroes have vot-

good ed there since Reconstruction

days. Only 370 have registered so far. Turner said, however, many more w;nt to vote but don’t try

for fear of the reprisals.

THE FOOD was sent by truck iiom Memphis, 30 miles away, and was distributed at the grocery store of John McFerrin, a Negro v ho is one of the leaders in the drive to gel Negroes registered, Turner said wholesalers and gasoline companies have refused to sell MxFcrrin any merchandise

.-:inc;c the drive started.

Turner said the food was distributed only to those families who weie suffering because some member had registered to vote. He said the NAACP was not in a position L help other Negro families in

this row-income county.

Turner said another shipment ol

food would be sent hdre and that a 10-day clothing drive had been organized in Memphis Negro

White farmers and businessmen in Fayette county say the shipments are no more necessary now than they were a year ago. “There is no need evident in this courty,” said Mayor I. P. Yancey, who denied there had been any economic reprisals taken against the Negroes. However, Turner said he had talked with several families, who have been getting v: op loans regularly from banks in the county for the past 20 years, and who said they were suddenly informed no more credit was available after they had registered. “And I talked With one man, he must be in his 70’s, who usually lives by doing odd jobs ” he s$id. “He went and registered and he hasn’t been able to get a single job since then. He’s living With one of his children and his wile is living with another one here in Memphis I asked them if they were having any marriage difficuhies. He said, ‘No, that’s the only way we can exist ’ ”
