Harlem Leader Says Negroes Need No Help NEW YORK (ANP)—New York City’s 1,000,000 Negro citizens are largly uncommitted on their choices for this year’s presidential election and in the 1961 mayoralty race, and will arrive at their decisions without outside help, J. Raymond Jones, Harlem Democratic leader and chief strategist of the United Democratic Leadership learn, declared last week. “Negro voters today are their own men and women and will reward parties, factions and candidates not on the basis of superficial cri> teria, but on a sound, realistic and rational evaluation of their interests and objectives,” Jones stated. ADDRESSING A FORUM meeting of the reform Lexington Democratic Club of the 9th Assembly District on the subject, “The Negro in New York City form movement, which is seeking Politics,” Jones criticized the reto overthrow Carmine DeSapio and Michael Prendergast, Democratic state chairman. He emphasized that a “new decade” of the Negro vote is present. Tracing the history of the Negro voters in New York City, Jones said, “Negroes will support the party, faction or individuals who will best express their interests regardless of ‘labels’, particularly in regard to their positions on civil rights matters and secondarily on economic and other public policy matters.” JONES, LEADER of the 13th A. D. East, Carver Democratic Club, who regained leadership last year along with Rep. Adam Powell in a sweep over DeSapiobacked leaders, said the “Uncle Tom” and “Tammany plantation” influences who were only interested in advancing themselves are 'no longer around in control in Negro communities.”
