Ousted AME Bishop Illegally Deprived of Office, Atty. Says MALCOLM POINDEXTER i

PHILADELPHIA

Bishop D. I

(A N P) —

. Ward Nichols of the African Methodist Episcopal Ghutch is being illegally kept from fulfttting the duties or his rightful office, his counsel said here

on Tuesday.

Basis of the charge is that at the. recent conference in Los

Angeles:

1 Three nrelates themselves 81on al wn,cn tn,s w discipline, presided over the conference floor

sesatons vital to his interests, and in violation of the church rules. 2. Church rules expressly forbid prelates under charges from presiding at conferences, and 3. Bishop Nichols at no time during the general conference was allowed to defend himself or answer charges made against him. Presiding at sessions in questions were Bishops Sherman Green, R. R. Right, Jr., and Gibbs. BISHOP NICHOLS refused to comment on rumors that he would be asked by dissident ministers 4nd high officials in the church

nomination.

This is the essence of the “exclusive” interview given here last week in the office of Atty. Isiah W. Cripnins, counsel for the controversial AME prelate who was given a four-year suspension from duties by the highest church

council.

Presiding over the hectic session at which this was done from

was Bishop

Silas Greene, one of three AME prelates who faced charges which

were dismissed.

Bishop Nichols said through his counsel that “all of the action, at the conference, and in the civil courts, was the result of spite work, jealousy, and for furtherance of personal ambitions” of

his enemies.

The Judicial Council of the church itself voted to absolve Bishop Nichols of any wrong-do-ing. A minority report was the undoing of this report, both Bishop Nichols and his lawyer pointed

to withdraw and form a new de-out.

so you watch for them.

Every clwrch in every community should have a well planned program for this summer for every day to keep the children busy doing something All the delegates to the National Baptist Sunday School Congress will make their report Sunday. There is always so much to learn at those meetings and I am sure they will have a lot to tell. May God bless and keep all the delegates from here and other places around the world who left this week for the Baptist Worlds tueeting In South America and the World’s Christian Convention in Scotland. Rev and Mrs. R. H. Peoples at Second Christian Church along with MIsb Catherine Carter will go to Scotland. Mr. Peoples will serve with the European press, and Rev. E. Odom. 25th St. Baptist, and Rev. J T. Highbaugh. Good Samaritan Baptist Church, are heading for South American. They will serve with the press people 1 learned only last week that Mrs. Lillian Hall will be going. Sheris a member of Second Baptist Church. The Methodist Churches had meeting last week at Lafayette. The failure of the church members to attend services regular’y came under the security of dele-

gates.

Dr. Herbert E. Stotts, head of Boston University and one of the conference speakers, reported that 5Q percent of the Methodist membership attend church less than 12 times a year and 20 percent never

attend Sunday Worship.

The report shows that 14,930 Methodists in Indiana were converted from Catholicism. Good for the Methodist Others need to get
