Self-Helpers Complete 32 Homes in Douglass Park Area
Local Family Hosts Pitch-In Picnic Mr. and Mrs. O'ie A. Morphis, 2U30 Shriver were host and hostess in their ho’ne Memorial Day for a “pitch-in” picnic Cut Hewers provided the centerpices on the tjbles. There we e 36 guest at the gala affair. Mr. Morphis displayed his talents as a chef barbecuing lamb and a variety of other tasty meat. Vegetables, salads, desserts an assortment of punch rounded out the menu. Cansey Downey took pictures before and after dinner. Attending the affair were the children of the hosts, Gilbert and Brenda; Mr. Morphis’ mother, Mrs. Eva Morphis; his sisters. Mesdames Blanche Hubble. Zula Watson and Lottie Kiminel; an uncle, Luke Coffee and Mrs. Hubble’s grandchildren, Lance. Tanya, Valerie, Kathy, and Ratline Terry. Other guests included Elder and Mrs. J. W. Thomas, Messrs and Mesdames Ernest Anderson, Eugene Burton, Olif McOampbell and son, Thomas: Mr. and Mrs. Cansey Downey and childien, Fredricka Ann, and Farre'l; Mrs Anna Washington, mother of Mrs. Downey, and Mesdames Earlee A. Combs, Genice Edwards, Gertrude l^?wis, Ophelia Bradley’, Anna Reagon, Emma Kelley, Miss Deborah Howard and Easter Harden.
Thirty-two happy families participated in the Planner House cooperative building project, will begin moving into their new homes this week. The homes are located on the Eastside in the Douglass Park area where 24 families have already been enjoying their three bedroom homes for nearly a year. According to an announcement by Clarence Wood, housing director for the self-help agency, a new section is opening near the present location for over 100 new homes. In the next few days forty-four families will select from sites on Ralston, Schofield and Sangster, between 27th and 29th streets. Other families wishing to participate in this experience must apply before June 13 in order to start in the newly opened section. Interested families may telephone for further information by calling ME. 5-7586 or by visiting the display office at 333 W. 16th. The most unique feature of these homes is that no down payment is needed for qualifying families—the husband’s work on his and his neighbors’ homes is counted as the down payment. EHA financing is available for the prospective homeowner with mortgages running for 20 years. A total of 237 Planner House have been completed in Indianapolis under the self-help program which has received national and international acclaim.
AT LASTThe Lester McClungs beam happily as they begin moving into their new Planner House home at 2808 N. Schofield. Mr. McClung, an employee of the Indianapolis Transit Co., worked side by side with 31 other men in the self-help housing project. The recently completed homes raises the total number of Planner House sponsored homes in the Douglass Park area to 56. The McClung's homes in Dduglass Park area to 56. The McClungs' dining area, kitchen, shower-bath, and is trimmed with Indiana Limestone.
