DETROIT, Mich. — Thomas F. Poag, Imperial .director of Voters Registration for the Imperial Council of Shriners, called on Shriners to redouble their efforts to increase the number of registrations. In issuing the chal’enge to Shriners throughout the United States he particularly urged an all out effort to secure registration during the week of April 17th through 23rd. Mr. Poag declared that no longer could Shriners be passive about the securing of full citizenship for aH people. He said that Shriners must exhibit an increased interest in the attainment of full citizenship

under law and order.

Mir Poag declared that Shriners were now interested in the exercise of American ideas and ideals of freedom and justice. He said that his organization was particularly concerned about full citizenship being granted every citizen, particularly the right to have the opportunity to vote in eve^y election, in the yight of changing world opinion about our Democracy. Mr. Poag pointed out that „ no longer could America tolerate the existence of discrimination and segregation based on race, color or re’igion in registration and vot-

ing.

In establishing the Voters Registration Drive Week Mr. Poag emphasized that Shriners were out to stz-engthen the democratic process. He suggested to members of his organization to ’’shun appeals to prejudice, rancor and ignorance which deform any worthwhile proj-

“Shriners are not

with the control of any election or any candidate,” he said “On the other hand we are more concerned with the masses exercising their right to franchise,” according to

Mr. Poag.

cial crises, the whites seem now to have decided on two old faithful standbys to meet the onslaught. THE TWO ARE VIOLENCE and

economic retaliation.

The first in the face of the non violent philosophy that underlies the Negro crusade is bound to bring discredit to the South in much the same way that violence has provoked the entire world

against South Africa.

The second is suicidal since the South is too dependent upon Negro

labor to discard it.

The NAACP and CORE conrentration on chain stores with jim crow lunch counters in the South is being felt in more No them than Southern worth. Kress, Kresge, Grant and Walgreen arc admittedly

concerned.

Their concern grows not only from the actual economic pressure of the boycott, but even more from the “bad press” and “ill wdll” developing. With powerful unions, religious denominations, universities and pc sonalities of national import criticizing them, they are in an unenviable position. So, like the storm troops in Alabama, the economic retaliation against the Negro crusade for dignity cannot effectively check the national momentum that has developed in the direction of more equality for Negroes in the South.
