The Tingler?’ That was the question most ofteh asked producer-ditector William Castle during the filming of “The Tingler,” Columbia Pictures’ hew terror film starring Vincent Price at the Wialker Theater Sunday. Castle, who isolated the “Tihgler” for the picture, described the organism as follows: “ ‘The Tingler’ exists an every human being. It is an ugly and dangerous thing—ugly because it is a creation of man’s fear, which is ugly, too—and awesome because a frightened man is dangerous. “It cannot be destroyed except by the human scream. Fear alone eriergizes ‘The Tingler’ and gives it strength. Fear causes the organism to spread along the spinal column and forces it to become arched and rigid Screaming makes ‘The Tingler’ stop bending the spinal columh, and destroys it. “Is the ‘Tingler’ actually alive . . . a separate living thing? All that we know is that it is a separate living thing inside our bodies, At man’s peak of terror, the ‘Tingler’ is a solid mass extending from the coccyx to the
cervical.”
Castle enjoyed a certain dramatic License in describing the dangerous organism, which can be seen in the picture in Percepto. A William Castle production, “The Tingler” features Judith EVelyn, Darryl Hickman ahd Patricia Cutts. Rbbb White penned the shocker’s script.
