LINCOLN AS A GENERAL ^Reprinted from the Norfolk Journal and Guide) “ ‘The MULES of Frederick the Great went through 20

campaigns but they were s III mules.'

There have been other mules since the days of Frederick the Great, but Abraham Llnooln was not one of them.” This quotation is taken from a modern milita y classic which is too little known, “THE MILITARY GENIUS OF ABRAHAM LINCOLN,” py Brig. Gen. Colin R. Ballard. General BALLARD, an Englishman, wrote the book in 1312. It is new

out of print for the second time.

In a short work, the .Brl ish general succeeded in giving a concise andfuil military hist cry of the American Civil War. The two great feemen of the war were Lincoln and Lee. But General Ballard wrote, “the brilliance of Lee’s exploits should not be allowed to daaxle our eyes to such an extent that we miss the significance of Lincoln's strategy.” The Civil Was the first great modern war fought with the use cf railroads. Lincoln’s strategy was bo h political and mllivary. He knew by instinct what to do. Aware of Ms deficiencies, he tried to correct them. Where he knew what to do, Ballard notes, he did it with supreme confidence. Ai this time of year, Lincoln is especially fresh in our miadft. And one of the most fascinating books about him is “The Military Genius of Abraham Llnooln.”

P. B. S. Pinchback'<18271921) colored reconstruction statesman and captain in the Civil War was bom. He held more public offices than any o'her colored person in his day. The highest office he held w r as as lieutenant governor and acting governor of Louisiana.

taled.

I OFTEN THINK of the time hat is spent by church missionary gi oups in many of our churches planning to raise money and how little time is spent in planning to win souls or bring new members

into he church.

I often wonder what God thinks abou.< that. I am almost sure that He is displeased because the lost souls should be the most sought after i-ather than the money. This year in all missionary groups of every church, I hope thau you will spend mo e time doing your missionary work than raising money Many souls die and go to hell because we are looking at the money side of God’s program. I know that money is needed to carry on the work, but the church needs to be about the Father's business of winning souls for Him. I AM VERY HAPPY over the response that we are receiving from groups who want to adop a person or a ward at Central Hospital. More are needed and if your group cannot adopt a ward, then why not adopt a person? The la est groups on our list are the Nurses Unit of First Baptist Church, North Indianapolis, Mrs. Josephine Burns, president, and Jre missionaiy society of Loving Baptist Church, Mrs. Elsie Thompson, president Thanks to all of you I HAVE BEEN ASKED to serve on the visual educational commitee of Mt. Central Bishops Favor End to Race Separation . CHICAGO —The bishops of the Central Jurisdiction are definitely in favor of abolishment of .he Cen- ; al Jurisdiction, according it) a statement by Bishop Willis J King in the current issue of Methodism’s family magazine, “Together ” The New Orleans prelate said Central bishops regard Amendment Nine “not only giving legal basis for such action but being a mpnda'e in that direction.” His staement is one of four by Methodist bishops concerning the jurisdictional system of the Methodist ehuroh and especially vhe Central Jurisdiction made up entirely of Neero churches. THE JURISDICTIONAL system into existence in 1939 at the merger of the Me.hodist Episcopal church, the Mfcihodlst Episcopal Church South and the Methodist Protestant Church. To simplify adminisralien, the church was divided into six jurisdieionst—five geographic and one, the Central Jurisdiction, composed of Negro annual conferences over most of the nation.
