Hayes did not limit his repertoire to folk songs but included music by Mozart, Bach and Beethoven as well as great operatic arias.

MARIAN ANDERSON, the great contralto, was refused permission to sing at Constitution Hall in 1939, and the ensuing protests grbw to such proportions that Harold L. Ickes, Secretary of the Interior, invited Miss Anderson to sing on Easter Sunday from the steps of the Lincoln Memorial ... at the feet of the Great Emancipator, with a vast unsegregated audience stretching for blocks before her ... In 1955 Miss Anderson became the first Negro primo donna of the Metropolitan Opera Company in New York. She also served as an alternate delegate to the United Nations. **
