NORTHWESTERN LIFE INSURANCE CO. Minneapolis, Minn., following a survey, reports that personal income for the year of 1959 will average a billion dollars or more a day. Further, the report was that per capita income indicated in 1959 an increase of fifty-three percent over that of a decade ago. However, less than half of the rise represents real buying power.

billion during the first 10 months of 1959. In keeping with the trend, it was predicted that income for the last two months of the year should boost the figure to around $379 billion. On this basis, it was concluded that the per capita income amounts to $2,140 for every man, woman and child over the nation. This is 53 percent higher than the reported per capita income of $1,-
400 in 1949.
However, the sponsor of the study noted that the 1959 per capita income buys only as much as $1,740 would buy in 1949. Therefore the buying power or “real” income of 1959 is only 24 percent over that of 1949. In this connection, the 1950 dollar bought actually about 19 percent more consumer goods than the 1959
dollar. * *. *
